The true equity answer would be to follow the attendance numbers even when they don't give the answer you want. The committee identified 4 holidays. The current attendance data only possibly supported the Islamic holidays, where it appears absences double. Rather than accept the data shows we have diversity but not as much as we'd like to brag about, they decided all or nothing. Picking and choosing which minority religions or cultures to follow isn't going to end well.
Instead they've done something in the name of equity that isn't equitable. January has only a few days that can be actual test or assignment days with block scheduling. That will hurt the kids who are struggling or have learning disabilities because now they will be slammed with tests and assignments on those days. |
find a religion that has those days as holidays and write a formal letter requesting equal standing. Be prepared to fund a lawsuit if they say no. Someone will end up doing it because FCPS has served it up on a platter and RFRA grants attorney's fees |
Freedom of religion means that you have the right to practice your religion without prosecution or persecution. It does not mean your religion must be acknowledged as a federal holiday or on calendars.
America is built on Christian principles. There’s no reason a public school needs to acknowledge Muslim or other holidays. WOULD YOU INSIST MUSLIM COUNTRIES ACKNOWLEDGE AND PROVIDE TIME OFF FOR CHRISTIAN HOLIDAYS? |
it also means that if one religion is granted privileges or standing all religions get the same privileges and standing. You can draw up a calendar without respect religion, but once you openly include certain religions in the process, you open yourself to challenges that you are advancing one religion over another. |
Which is why they unhooked spring break from Easter (and sometimes Passover, though incidentally). There's a leg to stand on with the federal holiday argument for Christmas. There isn't one for Easter. That's logical. |
the no test days will be the problem |
Especially since January is usually a wash with snow and/or cold days anyway. |
That’s not what it means at all. It means YOURE FREE TO WORSHIP AS YOUD LIKE. It does NOT mean the US must acknowledge or observe your religion. Only your right to practice it. |
' it also means that government can not prefer one religion over another (i.e. the establishment clause) |
But I FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LIKE IT WOULD BE MORE EQUITABLE and INCLUSIVE and NICE if every religion had their holidays off in the school calendar! |
Ah but the constitution does prefer one religion over others. Check which day of the week is the only day of the week mentioned! |
Yes, mentioning a day of the week overrides the establishment clause. |
“ Ah but the constitution does prefer one religion over others.
Check which day of the week is the only day of the week mentioned!” What in the world does this have to do with the calendar questions. |
Tuesday??? |
