Yes, I think it’s a little weird. But not necessarily in a bad way. I’d mostly be envious that a friend was making time to pursue something fun for themselves and unique from the mainstream. It’s the kind of thing I’d mention to my spouse in a “so Sarah told me Chris is making an elaborate star wars costume for himself. Kind of weird, right? Can’t wait to see it at Halloween!” way. And I would look forward to chatting with him about the details of it.
FWIW plenty of my friends think I’m pretty weird because I like sleeping outside in a tent. I think they are kind of weird for maintaining long sparkly nails impractical nails on their fingers. But we all appreciate each other and enjoy each other’s company! Unlike the costume though, conversation about nail dips bore me half to death. |

I have 3 very elaborate costumes that I have been gradually creating for around 15 years. I don’t put significant effort into it, but there is some sewing involved and I do scout a few pieces from time to time. DH does not care, but does not really participate. He wears whatever he needs to for his coordinating costume, but that’s typically more low key than mine. We throw/attend great Halloween or themed parties, so it’s worthwhile for us. One of the themed parties is annual and my friends have elaborate costumes that put mine to shame.
My dad spent 40 years of his life building a model train village in his basement. Is that hobby more acceptable to you? How about building model cars and painting and displaying them? Let people enjoy something that doesn’t hurt you. |
| Not weird but maybe if the actual costume choice was weird. For instance, if he’s the Alien from “Alien,” that’s weird. |

Dressing up as a comic book or movie character looks fun to me but I doubt I'll ever do it myself.
Sometimes I dress up as a Knicks fan even though I haven't been that into the Knicks since I was a kid. I also wore a tuxedo to a Presidential ball and pretended to be a Washington Insider. |

Normal people are boring most of the time; work, watch sports and play golf, yawn.
In my experience the freaks are the real interesting people with something to say and passion for their interests. Talk with Frank from sales about his boat or talk with Dave who has this crazy fetish where he dresses like Sonic the Hedgehog and has sex with others dressed similarly? I’m team Dave all the way! |
| It’s weird but it’s so awesome. I very much admire people who do it. Also women who dress up in romantic post raphalite type outfits. The best. |
+1 Fair or not, I judge people who are overly into comicon and other -cons to the point that it’s a huge part of their identity. Weird. |
More power to them. Not my fetish. But to each his own. Remember the line from that Bare Naked Ladies song: “Sailor Moons got the boom anime, that always makes me think the wrong thing.” |
