My 2 yo who has been masking in public all year, including at preschool, hasn’t been sick a single time this year. My friend’s 2 yo, who doesn’t mask at school, has been sick multiple times this year with various viruses. So the masks aren’t completely useless. |
Do you honestly think you are saving lives by masking your two year old? Even in elementary, middle, and high school the benefits are modest. Don’t believe me, look at the data during high community spread. https://statsiq.co1.qualtrics.com/public-dashboard/v0/dashboard/5f78e5d4de521a001036f78e#/dashboard/5f78e5d4de521a001036f78e?pageId=Page_ffb4dc52-5543-46b2-8126-2b7229fd1b17 Now, think about masking kids who lick their masks or put them back on without washing their hands. In fact, I bet a daycare worker has helped your kid with his/her mask without washing their hands first. Moms on this thread are admitting to sending their kids into the world with poorly fit masks. Show me data that masking 2-4 year olds is of any benefit. There is a reason the WHO recommends against masking kids under 5. |
WOW! I'm shook reading this thread. I have a 2 year old (December baby) and yes, bought a few masks for her to try on but never really enforced it so it's not even a thought for me at this point when taking her to the playground. The boys (10 and 5) wear one every time. |
Are they in the same cohort? Are you following the same precautions otherwise? DD is in preschool (masked) and hasn’t been sick all year. But, sick kids stay home, and kids wash their hands upon arrival and before dismissal. We don’t know to what extent the individual NPIs are contributing. Interestingly, although flu has essentially disappeared, rhinovirus is at normal levels. Not sure it’s actually a great thing that young kids have not been sick this year. Surely I am not the only one who is wondering what our next flu season will look like. |

I have no idea if it is saving lives or is just pandemic theater. We mask because it is required to do the things we want. The other option is to keep my 2 yo at home or send her to some other school that doesn’t require masks. We aren’t willing to do either, so we mask. She gets to attend the school she loves, socialize with all her little friends, and live like a normal kid because she wears a piece of cloth over her mouth and nose. I’ll take that over keeping my kid miserable and at home until whenever the powers that be call the pandemic over. |
Eh, I have two kids at different daycares, at my 4yo’s center they all wear masks. At my 2yi’s in home daycare, none of the kids wear masks (the teachers do). Neither kid has been sick. |
This is a good point. So many how-to videos early on in the pandemic about the proper way to take a mask on and off. Not kidding myself that my child or her teacher are doing it perfectly. Not that I do either at this point, I’ve probably worn the one in my car too many times now, oops. Contaminated masks FTW! |
It’s not all roses and rainbows. I have three kids 8, 6, and 2. The 8 and 6 year olds understand the rules and wear their masks but are old enough to tell me they get hot and sweaty running around in them and don’t like them. The 8 year old seems more sensitive and pulls it below the nose when running heavily subconsciously and needs a reminder to put it back up. The two year old is still pooping her pants so obviously Travis Gayles has no kids or didn’t actually practice pediatric medicine to think it’s anything but mean to strap fabric to a toddlers face. As previous posters mentioned the freaking WHO does not recommend them before 5 for all of the obvious reasons including speech development, drooling and sucking on the mask, etc. |
I don’t agree with it either, but Gayles is just following the cdc recommendation. Until they change it don’t expect Gayles to change. |
Yeah cause it’s going well for Europe!! |
They are doing better than we are and their kids aren’t masked. |
That reminds me, the WHO also recommends against wearing masks to exercise. Surely the sweat has something to do with it. We know wet masks are more harmful than beneficial. Why are we masking kids to play sports outside? I know we will look back one day and laugh (or cry)... |
Yeah we have a mask in the car..an emergency mask we call it. It’s probably been worn by my husband a handful of times. But I am not sure it’s been washed. Ew. |
"It can cause trouble breathing, you're gonna have trouble breathing through a wet mask," Nabha said. "Number two, it can harbor bacteria and fungus, and number three, it may not work as well.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wusa9.com/amp/article/news/verify/does-a-wet-mask-make-a-difference-or-am-i-safe-wet-mask-efficiancy-vs-dry-masks/65-5d760229-9e3e-4649-b420-969c74f219cb Wonder how many two year olds are wearing wet masks for hours every day. |
Your two year old licks their mask? |
