Figuring out whether kids should be in school full time is a question that certainly has a scientific component, but it's a policy question about weighing different values and priorities. Whether I'm "smarter" than "the scientists" isn't really relevant to whether I get to have a perspective on this. And people who are familiar with the messiness of research and the extreme messiness of how research gets translated into policy don't talk this way.

Ugh. First it was ignoring science altogether because 2020, then it was 'But the science!' and now it's "yeah, ok, there's science, but if I'm shrill enough and shrewd enough, my arguments and needs could very well prevail over science, because the relationship between science and policy is so complicated and messy."

You are misconstruing what the PP said.

Rephrasing with cynicism and bitterness.

No, distorting, either willfully or due to lack of comprehension.

Question: for the parents who worry that their kids aren't safe (against all available evidence), why don't you just keep your kids home, STFU and let the rest of us get back to living in a productive and useful society? I feel bad for your children, but I don't know how else to proceed. You are dead weight dragging all of us down. Maybe once the rest of us are allowed to move forward, you'll see that it's fine and come to your senses.

I agree! NO one is taking away their ability to learn virtually! Why are they advocating against learning in person for those of us who want it? You have your choice and why can't we have ours?

Because you're trying to take OUR teachers and balloon class sizes, all in the name of your fake concerns. Use your resources to make DL better for the rest of this year. Because not all of you will be getting in person.

So you're going to just deny our concerns by calling them fake? Like fake news? You don't like the data or the facts so you're just going to call it fake?

You are affirmatively choosing failure. That is what you are doing. Call it whatever you want. You have become a deadweight loss. If you want to continue it, do that, but let the rest of be free to live a productive life. Nobody is making you choose failure.

I think you are responding to the wrong PP.

I am very concerned about this. DME Paul Kihn is already hedging on the topic, apparently making full-time school contingent on a pediatric vaccine. Somebody needs to stop this crazy train from gaining steam. Kids do NOT need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen fully, especially if the vaccines prevent severe illness rather than stop all transmission anyway. We need to come to our senses and live with this virus.

Source please. Where did he say that? People are just posting wild crazy assertions on here and other people are believing it hook, line and sinker. Where did he say that?

Paul Kihn, deputy mayor for education, at the Feb. 3 SBOE working session:

“We also believe and, I know I personally think this, the virus is insidious and we have no idea what the world will look like in September. We do know that there will be no child vaccine, probably, by then and so we need to prepare for a September that is not necessarily going to be normal. So we should be preparing for a September that could have some version of hybrid or virtual ongoing. So we also think it's important that we continue to support our teachers who are at the center of this endeavor as they continue strengthening their virtual education skills.”

Time to move!

He doesnt seem to realize that coronavirus is going to be with us forever, and that it will constantly mutate. He also doesnt seem to realize how long it takes to develop pediatric vaccines or that there may never be a pediatric vaccine.

Here's his email: Paul.Kihm@dc.gov. Write him and tell him how nuts this is.

You made a mistake in the email address, his name is Paul Kihn, so it's Paul.Kihn@dc.gov.

I agree what he is saying is nuts and we should start making a ruckus if this idea gains any traction.

What a string of nutballs.
Those of us seeing that there are serious risks with in-person school, especially in the context of parents lobbying for more than 11 kids/class, are not dead weight. We're actively supporting life, learning, science-based policy decisions.
It's pretty funny to see you shout both at the cautious parents "Get with the program, deadweights! Science!" and at the decision-maker "We hate your program! Don't be so uptight with the science when our kids miss each other!"

The entire medical community says schools should be open and that it is safe.

IT HAS BEEN A FULL YEAR. Kids need to get back in school. We all need to reset our risk perception.
