DD Wants to dye her hair black?

I would discourage black hair, because, as others have mentioned, it's extremely difficult to lighten once it's been dyed. It will take multiple steps by a professional hair colorist to get it back to it's original color.

I'd suggest she try fun semi-permanent colors at home (Manic Panic, Arctic Fox, Sephora Hair, Overtone, etc).

why are you so obsessed with your daughter fitting in? Just let her be herself.

Jeez. You keep controlling her like this and she's going to go off the rails.

It's just hair, lady.

I would not fight her -- in the choose your battle spirit -- but take her for a consult with a "visagiste"/hair specialist who would be able to advise her on color/style etc.

This way she will hear concerns about her choices from someone else + whatever the choice is, it will be done properly.

In addition, she will feel special and that you are listening to her.

I know, covid and all, but some salons have outside meeting Salon Leau in Georgetown for instance (but cheaper places must too).

Please let her. Safe way to experiment

Op has identified as a man, pp. Why does everyone assume a woman?

From what I understand, the process of going back to her original color or another color can be expensive, time consuming and very damaging to the hair. Maybe encourage her to chat with someone who does hair for a living if you have any friends or family.

This is a good point. Maybe she could try a temporary dye first. But the teenage years are really where people should be free to show thier independence and creativity.

I see three gateway options that would allow your daughter to try the color before a full commitment. Ask her to try one of the following three options and wait a month before doing her preferred black with blonde streaks look.

1. Ask her to dye the ends black first. Just the bottom inch or two.

2. Have her do a black streak. Try to place it near the front, where one would normally cut bangs. If she hates it, she will be able to cut it out sooner, without getting a big chop.

3. Place a black section underneath. If she hates it, she can get an undercut and completely remove the dyed hair. This is a better option for someone with thick, heavy hair.

In the end, much better for her to have a bad dye job in high school than in college or beyond.

Get her a wig - a nice one, not one of those dollar store cheapies, but rather one as close as possible to her real hair texture. She can test the look out without having to deal with the full consequence of the upkeep hassle and/or removal.

This is a really good idea.

When I was a freshmen in college (years and years ago) I dyed my hair black but used Henna, so never has that roots line - it just faded over time...and no harsh chemicals so my hair wasn’t dry or damaged.
