Oh yes. He's licensed and paid. Been coaching for many, many years at multiple local travel clubs. It's a small club that's run by volunteers so our fees are very low. We play our seasons in NCSL but do about three tournaments (and scrimmage) where we compete against NPL, CCL, and EDP teams.

Just wanted to add: There are some obvious downsides to smaller clubs—but if your child is a decent player, wants to progress, but is self-aware enough to know they are not getting a college scholarship to play soccer, small clubs (with reasonable fees!) are good enough. I'll never understand playing upwards of $3k a year if your child isn't college-sports bound. Just find a decent coach and teammates that he likes!

Absolutely. I do think though that most kids on an ECNL team have at least a hope or goal of playing at college.

Well that and the fact that teamsnap is custom designed for the purpose, easily updated etc. and a subscription includes technical support. And you think clubs should build and maintain their own webpages to do this? If my DC's club did this I wuld immediately assume that the web-site builder was a board member's cousin or somethuing similar.

Oh - not the NCSL teams are better than local ECNL teams BS again. No they're not. It is just about possible that the very best NCSL team in one or two age groups is on a par with the very worst ECNL team in that age group. For the most part there is a massive gap and the best NCSL team is significantly inferior to the second team of the ECNL club.

Frankly, if a coach is very good at reaching younger kids and keeping them motivated, happy and learning then that coach is the perfect spot.

I ma not at the club. My angle is simple. Find a coach you like. Use your previous coach as an ideal but what about him was it that connected to your son?

My other point is, wishing your old coach was still your coach at a older age group is the wrong way to look at it. Again, soccer gets more complicated and you had addressed the coach's overall lack of playing and coaching experience. The game and its coaching demands 11v11 onwards get more complicated. being a great U11 coach does not always translate to U13, U14 etc. On the flip side, expecting Pep Guardiola to be a great youth coach would be just as disastrous.

So, think about your previous coaches personality traits and look for that in a appropriate experienced coach for your kids current age group.

This is definitely true, although some coaches excel with both young and older kids - but they need to combine two separate skillsets to do so.
