OK, so let’s kick Janney kids out of the feeder path because they don’t have any more right to go to the school than Lafayette kids. Oh, but Janney is so close that it doesn’t make “sense” to kick them out? That’s why they want to kick out the OOB kids. The kids zoned IB for Deal live closer to Deal than those that live OOB. Sometimes it’s not about race or class. |
It’s a neighborhood school. |
Doesn't have to be, though, and if it's 20 percent OOB, it's not really an entirely neighborhood school, anyway. |
It’s overcrowded and failing all its students. There is no will to improve MSs in DC. |
So make all middle school and high school admissions by lottery, with no geographic preference. |
DP here. I don't agree with this because then anyone who can will flee DCPS and it will be as bad as it was 30 years ago. However, I don't think we should kick out current OOB kids from the feeders. They bought into a feeder pattern and it's not fair to yank that away after it's too late for them to take any other options they would have chosen. FWIW we're IB for Deal and Wilson. We're Deal parents and while Deal is a big school, I don't see how it's overcrowded. And please spare me the hand waving about the trailers. I've been inside them pre-COVID and they're perfectly acceptable spaces for learning. |
My MCPS elementary school had trailers 35 years ago, so I’m not particularly worried about that, either. |
My kids have been in trailers for the majority of their DCPS ES years and they are fine. But Deal is overcrowded, even with trailers. |
Yes, by all means lest stop having kids walk to school. Screw the environment! Global warming is a hoax. /s |
