OPEN THE SCHOOLS

Seems that’s the best number in the region—are they steady/declining or increasing?

So why is Maryland on NY's quarantine list? Honest question. I can't keep any of these metrics straight.

Because they have more than 10 per 100k cases per day on a 7-day average. Same as Virginia.

Me too. Someone with good numbers had to be willing to try. Otherwise all we have to go on are the southern states who probably have no business opening anything right now.

But I thought liberal cities were only closing schools to stick it to the American people, silence the children and piss off Trump. They decided to open based on numbers?

They never learn, do they?

You mean not everyone is a crazy person like you?

Teachers will hold the government to task for creating a safe work environment and providing adequate funding necessary to do so. After seeing how school re-openings have failed around the country to date, I would think that parents would be even more militant in demanding a safe environment for their child. I'm beginning to believe that many parents legitimately do not care about their child's health and well-being.

Cuomo is not a liberal or a progressive. He refuses to tax the wealthy, claiming that he is trying to retain the tax base by keeping their taxes low. He cut medicaid funding during the pandemic. He opposes defunding the police. New York is the economic engine of the country, and has had record losses in the past few months. Don't think for a minute that this isn't an economic decision. It has nothing to do with the children or prioritizing schools.

show me how they failed. Not just that people caught covid but that it caused increased hospitalizations or deaths.

Except it won’t really help the economy in the short term, because every plan I’ve heard about is a hybrid, so it’s still going to be super hard on working parents. But you have to start somewhere. I’m not quite the pessimist you are that this has nothing to do with prioritizing the well-being of children. A significant number of students in NYC literally fell off the map when schools closed in March. If you can see these kids in person even a couple days per week, you have a chance of reaching them and working through some of the difficulties with remote learning.

Don’t get me wrong- I think everyone should be pushing for increased safety measures where the plans are falling short. If that means paying nurses double so that all schools are staffed, so be it.

I'm willing to wait for a reevaluation at the end of the first quarter. Sorry, but I am concerned about increases as it gets cold, people spend more time indoors, other seasonal illnesses ramp up, etc.

Right now, everyone is still mostly outside. Kids could be outside at schools that open, at available sports, after school etc. That will not be the case come October.

While I have no issue with NY wanting to test it out, I'm not in favor of that here at this time. Save the replies with whatever your metric is for what we should do XXXX. It won't change my opinion.

Just 2 days a week though for social distancing.

Not sure how great that is.

2 days a week, big whoop

Not jealous

NY’s positivity rate is under 2%

They have no excuse not to open, outside of some huge surge in late August.

Solve the virus spread and you solve the problems of schools (and work, and travel, and just about everything else). But most people here would rather just argue about the everything else rather than solve the real problem.

Many NOVA jurisdictions positivity rate is below 5%. Honest question, what number are you okay with? NYC’s metric to reopen is 5%— although they are lower.

DP.. what's the 7 day rolling average? Is nova/VA seeing cases go up even as the rate is below 5%? Then that's a concern. NY's rate is flat or going down. That's why they feel it's ok to re-open.

Fairfax County is currently at 5.6 cases per 100,000 and steady if not slightly declining (we were at 6.1 at end of July).

So, on average, 99,994 healthy students/adults in Fairfax County out of 100,000. .

If we get to 99,996 heathy students/adults, can we reopen? This is ridiculous.

Exactly. Does anyone know what positivity rates we are waiting on? I believe DC and NYC have similar positivity rates, yet one is closed and the other is allowed to open. Assume that in the absence of federal guidance this is a district-based decision? Are teachers looking for 0%? Not sure if the unions have said anything in this regard.

Yes teachers want two full weeks of no new cases before reopening schools. NYC teachers will strike o er this, just watch.

You people are so desperate at this point. The narrative of hysteria is collapsing and you look pathetic. Cut your losses.
