But I thought liberal cities were only closing schools to stick it to the American people, silence the children and piss off Trump. They decided to open based on numbers?
Cuomo is not a liberal or a progressive. He refuses to tax the wealthy, claiming that he is trying to retain the tax base by keeping their taxes low. He cut medicaid funding during the pandemic. He opposes defunding the police. New York is the economic engine of the country, and has had record losses in the past few months. Don't think for a minute that this isn't an economic decision. It has nothing to do with the children or prioritizing schools.
Except it won’t really help the economy in the short term, because every plan I’ve heard about is a hybrid, so it’s still going to be super hard on working parents. But you have to start somewhere. I’m not quite the pessimist you are that this has nothing to do with prioritizing the well-being of children. A significant number of students in NYC literally fell off the map when schools closed in March. If you can see these kids in person even a couple days per week, you have a chance of reaching them and working through some of the difficulties with remote learning. Don’t get me wrong- I think everyone should be pushing for increased safety measures where the plans are falling short. If that means paying nurses double so that all schools are staffed, so be it.
