McLean>Vienna>Bethesda>Chevy CHase>Silver Spring

I also went to UMD so I am well familiar with the area and you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me to live in College Park or Hyattsville.

If this is your list for the OP, you clearly are not someone who has a budget similar to that of the OP. I would love to know the "reasons" you dislike College Park and Hyattsville so much.

The "" are loaded with read between the lines.

I just put "" there to emphasize that most people I've met would not use those specific terms to describe any of those areas. I wasn't intending for any read between the lines, whatever that means. All three areas are higher crime than other areas of MoCo like Bethesda, and Bethesda is already between 2x and 4x higher crime than Nova.

What kind of people have you met? Don't tell me, we all know.
No one would ever say that McLean and Vienna are more desirable than Bethesda and Chevy Chase, not even in a million years.

I know reading comprehension is hard, but I said most people I know would not describe OPs three areas as "safe" or "desirable". I then went on to give MY PERSONAL RANKING of the places I have lived, which has been probably more places in the DC area than most people. How many other people do you know that have lived in McLean, Vienna, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase? I bet none.

+1. Just go bestplaces.net/crime and you can compare any two cities. Bethesda vs Vienna double the violent crime. College Park vs Bethesda double violent crime again.

That's why I asked "what kind of people YOU know and meet?" You don't need to tell us , we all know.
I have known too many people who have lived in those places, including me.

People in this forum hate Virginia. It’s pretty similar to MD. For you budget in a “nice” neighborhood. TH.

I'm not sure that website fully reflects the situation because it's using some kind of weird "index" that it created itself. If you go to https://www.areavibes.com/crime-comparison/ they have the actual rates of crime per 100k residents. Based on the comparison you just did, it looks a lot worse. Vienna 48/100k violent crime. Bethesda 216/100k. College Park 639/100k!!! This makes Bethesda over four times worse than Vienna, and College Park three times worse than Bethesda. Hyattsville, on the other hand, is "only" double the violent crime of Bethesda.

Comparing college park to Charlottesville is like comparing Vegas to Venice.

Vienna, one zip code and a population of about 17,000 habitants
Bethesda, 3 zip codes and a population of about 70,000 habitants.

LOL. You must be new here.
This forum is anti-MD, anti-MoCo and anti-MCPS.

It’s a crime RATE comparison. Do you understand what a rate means?

Of those three, I would say Silver Spring if you want suburbs, Hyattsville if you want more of an urban feel. Houses in my Silver Spring neighborhood are being bought quickly, and we live not too far from Glenmont.

I really don't get the anti-MD and anti-VA folks. I've lived in both and I like both. Some people have inferiority complex I guess. We're neighbors for crying out loud and many of us live in one state and work in the other. The differences are negligible. At the end of the day, I would move out of the area and retire outside this region.

Anonymous wrote:Look at Bowie. My family has been here for nearly 60 years, and it’s beautiful, safe, and affordable. It’s the perfect commute to DC along Route 50, which my mom still remembers as a dirt road.

Thank you. How long does it take during normal times? And is there a non-driving way to commute in? I will probably prefer to drive for a while but after the pandemic ends, I will want to take the train again.

Commuting options from Bowie to DC:
https://www.cityofbowie.org/128/Commuting
https://www.cityofbowie.org/439/Local-Metrobus-Routes

The drive from my house to Union Station right now (7:45 AM) is 30 minutes. It’s a straight shot down Route 50, though of course there can be congestion. My daughter lives in Bowie & works in DC, and she heads out early so she can enjoy a regular 30-minute drive.

If you’re not driving, you could take the Metrobus to New Carrollton Station & then take the Metro to your desired stop.

Here’s a nice Cape Cod model in the Kenilworth Elementary neighborhood:
https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2610-Kimble-Ln_Bowie_MD_20715_M50170-32773?view=qv

A decent flip for a 3-bedroom Colonial model, also in the Kenilworth neighborhood:
https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2505-Kennet-Ln_Bowie_MD_20715_M68108-03022?view=qv

If your family has really been in Bowie for over 60 years, you’d know it is “K Section” or “Kenilworth,” not “the Kenilworth neighborhood.”

Anonymous wrote:You may already know this, but the property taxes in MD are some of the worst in the country, that's why homes are so much cheaper there. Their income taxes are also higher than Virginia's. Also, Virginia has some of the best public schools in the country and great public universities. Just be sure to weigh the cons as well as pros. But you know your circumstances best. Best of luck!!

You will also pay high transfer taxes when you buy a home. Maryland is a liberal state and has Hugh social welfare needs in Western Maryland, the Eastern Shore, and Baltimore that are largely funded buy the areas close to Washington.

They support the needy...yikes...stay away!!

Big difference between helping the needy and Peronist diversion of funds to buy political power while maintaining a permanently dependent underclass.
