It's time for bicycles to have tags and registration fees, and pay the equivalent of fuel taxes.

Sorry. This thread has been:

Ok boom.... oh do you need me to say it?

Nope sorry. Cats should be taxed at 2x the current rate and gas prices should double to fund renewable energy. People who bike should get a tax credit. But don’t worry SUV driver, national policy is firmly on your side. You’ll just have to soldier on as a few choose the exercise and help the planet.

Bike insurance is important in hit and run and underinsured motorists. Biker would be covered under no fault all medical expenses

Also in NYC AKA Manhattan roughy the same amount of Pedestrians have been killed by bikers as cars.

In NYC so far this year (2019):

Drivers have killed 104 pedestrians
Drivers have killed 27 bicyclists
Bicyclists have killed 2 pedestrians

Bikes need to be registered, tagged and insured, and there needs to be some sort of fuel tax equivalent paid.

I'm not suggesting it should be comparable to vehicles, because their impact on the roads is much smaller. But it should be scaled down appropriately to fit. A car might cost a few hundred dollars to register every couple years. A bike might perhaps cost $20. Same for fuel tax equivalent, maybe $5 annually.

This needs to become a reality.

Not reading this thread.. The bicycle mafia will hunt you down before this discussion winds down. You'll need to skip the country.

Hah, you can't be serious

I would be happy to pay for the negligible amount of wear to a road caused by my bike, if we also fully tax all the negative externalities caused by cars- noise pollution, air pollution, risk of deaths from collisions and from the pollution...

Take all the $ from fines on motorists who park in bike lanes, put it in a fund for people hit by hit and run bike riders. You would have way more $ coming in than going out.

But "equivalent of a fuel tax" for a vehicle that doesn't use fuel or damage the roads is extremely stupid.

Yes for identification purposes! Sibling (teen) biking to work was hit by car and police contacted my parents through the bike registration.

Seems like identification carried by the person on the bike would be a more effective way to contact family than bike registration.

Montgomery County requires bike owners to register their bikes. Should I register my kids' bikes in their names, since they are the bike owners? Or in my name, so that the bike registration information is for me?

No you wouldn’t. Who actually gets fined for parking in the bike lane? It’s safer from fines than parking at the curb.

I ommitted to mention "if we seriously enforced against parking in the bike lane" In my scenario, all the folks who complain about being hit by hit and run bikers would have an incentive to support such enforcement.
