Why on earth would Ellen need a nickname? Maybe "El" in very familiar situations, but swapping Ellie for Ellen just makes no sense to me. |
Neither. Plain dumb, and a crime on a girl. |
PP here. I agree Ellen does not need a nickname; i just think others (teachers, kids, etc.) will start calling her Ellie and it will stick. Its also my concern with my other top name: love Caroline, hate nn Carrie. |
What about Ellen nicknamed Nell? I know its traditionally for Hellen but I think it works both ways.

| Tell the truth OP -- you also want to get a dog and name it Maverick, Payton or Sawyer, don't you |
Ellen and Nell are even worse than Ellington. |
Neither does using Jack for John, but people do it. |
dp This is silly, pp. My SIL is Caroline and no one has ever called her Carrie, just Caroline. I believe it will be the same for Ellen. Heck, my dd is Madeleine and no one refers to her as Maddy. If on the rare change they do she politely says she prefers Madeleine. nbd |
dp only because the parents or kids say the name they prefer is Jack. My dd knows two Johns, one goes by Jack and the other John. I think my mother's generation ( silent) everyone had a nn even if it didn't go with the name or even if it wasn't wanted. But, I think today people generally respect people and what they want to be called. One time my mom said she couldn't remember her childhood friends real names. |
Agreed. I have a Margaret who at age 3 decided she didn’t want a nickname. People respect that and call her Margaret. If not, she politely corrects them. |
