Ellington for a girl?

Only if it is a family name. Otherwise, sounds like you are trying too hard.

When people pick these random last names, don't they ever worry about naming their kid after a confederate general or something.

Including Larla.

So missing-the-mark pretentious. Cringe!

Your daughter must be named Edna or Thelma.

No Elizabeth, Katherine, or Charlotte

I know an Islington, nn Izzy.

It's a horse.

NP: I work with a guy named Coltrane. Super cool guy.

In Philly? I knew a guy named Coltrane too!

I know two Tranes. Not that uncommon!

DP. Eh, get out of here with your rolling eyes. I only considered super traditional names for my children, but I think it's great that a musician would consider jazz connected names for his/her own child. Names that are meaningful in a family are always cool.

OP, I like Ellington a lot.

The girl I know with this name has siblings who all have jazz names also.

Only if your last name is Duke.

Sounds like a Sunday family dinner.

I would respectfully disagree.

Funny. I grew up in Ellington, CT - named for an "Ellington" in the UK. Never thought I'd see it pop up as a first name.

Don't care for it as a name at all unless there was a special family connection.

Only if you like the name "Ellie"

Sounds like the first name of an obscure and pompous author. Do you really want that for your little girl?
