Areas where governor's school helped my DC: -College application- Listed under honors/awards AND activities. Also part of short-answer essay questions. -AP course- DC started a research project during Governor's school, which transitioned to a Capstone project in 12th grade. -Resume- Listed under Honors/awards -Friends- found a group of friends with similar interests. They do reunions every few months. Overall a fantastic experience. |
| My kid went to Governors's school school for Math and Science programs when he was a rising junior. I don't know if it helped with applications, we'd like to think it counted for the state schools. But it certainly was a great experience, he counts that as one of his best high school experiences, made great friendships, broadened his horizons and gave him clarity on what he wanted to do. It is a wonderful program, go for it and don't think about college admission. |
Yes, the ones in VA for Music in the 80s were great, but I'd been to a much better quality summer camp for 4 summers before that. But for most kids, it was a really good experience. I went on to be a music performance major at a T3 music school. Almost wish I had selected the STEM academic one instead, as that was my other area of interest. |
| Has anyone heard about this year yet? DD is waiting to find out. |
| Don’t understand why it has to take so long-expecting to hear something next Friday, April 14 per website. Or at least the schools should know by then and you can check with them. |
| Thanks for the date. The email my daughter received said “early April” so she has been checking email. |
| I think the schools find out by email; the kids get informed regular mail. |
I will have to confirm with my daughter but I think she told me that the email she received when she made it out of the county said the next notification would be an email from VDOE. My older kid did it but I can’t remember how she found out. |

VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION NOTIFICATION PROCESS
Each nominee will be sent an email regarding his or her application status by mid-April 2023. Prior to sending the emails to all nominees, the gifted education coordinator for each division will receive a status list indicating “invited,” “alternate,” or “not accepted” status for individual nominees. Gifted education coordinators are welcome to share this information with the nominees. Each student's email will be sent directly to the student email address indicated on the nominee's application (no school emails should be used). |
| Thank you! |

Good luck to those waiting!
My DC just mentioned the other day that Gov School has been the best experience of his high school life. |
| This thread is helpful….my DD just got accepted to a residential summer research program that is very selective but not free. She has until tomorrow to decide whether to take the spot. She is weighing going vs being home and continuing research locally that she has set up and a paid job at a camp that she’s volunteered at for 2 years. I think both are good options and I don’t think either is a bad choice. There is definitely value to the residential aspect. But if she goes it’s a very full summer that disrupts the continuity of some activities and gets her back a week late for the summer start of her fall sport. (She already reached out to the coach and cleared that it would be ok) |
|
Paying to attend a summer program is definitely a different thing than these selective, free Governor’s School programs.
Still waiting to hear here! |
| Waiting on STEM school….I’ve heard the foreign language acceptances for Wash and Lee are out. So cruel to have to wait this long! |
| Yes! My kids going to language academy. She’s so excited. |
