Is Summer Residential Governor’s Schools a big deal?

Keep in mind there are also Governer's School's state wide that are full time. My child never participated in a summer program but did do one Junior and Senior year, amazing program that was instrumental in developing the skills necessary to be successful in college.

yeah, I have a friend in SW VA (near Tech and Radford) that has a son at one of the academic year schools.

And I know there is an arts one in the Tidewater area.

DC got accepted this summer for Humanities so I can you the process this year. It's probably the same timeline every year.

Oct 20- School sent Gov School Announcement
Oct 20- The student submits interest form (required to attend interest meeting)
Oct 26 - The student attends interest meeting
Nov 15- First part of applications due to the counselor- Application has test scores, activities- The counselor will verify test scores- CogAT, SAT etc. )
Dec 7 Student submits the rest of the application to the counselor- recommendation letters and essay.
Jan 27- The school nominated 10 to move forward to the county level.
Feb 25- DC got a notification about advancing to the state level.
April 15- Got notified that DC was accepted.

Long process. Lots of waiting so we had to have backup plans.
DC went to Johns Hopkins CTY for years so it was a relief to not have to pay a lot this summer.

It’s not quite the same but UMD does have the Terp Young Scholars Program.

Wouldn't call it privilege exactly.

- Signed, Immigrant family who wanted to support DC's education even though it was financially a stretch, but couldn't find free programs that were available for residential summers until Governor's school.
