Roommate told me that I no longer have access to the washer and dryer. Do I have any recourse?

Do most DCUMers only have the one set of towels and a week's worth of underwear? As a single person, once a week is totally reasonable. Whites (which take up the least volume. I hated wasting water on just a week's worth. (In case you can't fathom one pair a day AND working out, here's how: work out in morning, change out of old underwear, shower, dress for the day, change into PJs at night.). Here's ONE of example of a 1 wash per week schedule, totally doable for a singleton or couple:

Week 1: wash (and iron!) outer clothes for next two weeks.
Week 2: wash bed and bath linens
Week 3: wash underwear and Pjs for next two weeks
Week 4: wash bed and bath linens

Yeah I could skip laundry for a month or more and still have clean underwear, clothes, sheets, and towels to wear and use.

I would carry my laundry basket right to the washer and empty it in there while making direct eye contact with her the whole time.

Well, your underwear isn’t really clean if you’re not washing in hot water, and neither are your sheets and towels. And if you’re washing everything in hot, you’re probably ruining half your wardrobe.

LOL. What do you do with your underwear that you need to wash it in hot water??

Just do laundry when she's not there.

Yes, that's the best thing

2-3 times a week is a lot for one person. It could be she doesn’t want to hear the washer/ dryer every day either.

I admit that as a landlord who owns my house and pays the full utility bills, I've had a couple of roommates whose laundry habits drove me crazy. One roommate would literally wash 3 garments as a load because she didn't plan ahead and wanted to wear those jeans later. This irritated the crap out of me because it's really wasteful. But I didn't say anything and didn't ban her - I was just glad when she moved out and my water bill went way down. (she also took looooong showers.)

If you do anything like that, tell her you'll be more efficient with your laundry and maybe she'll let you do it. Otherwise, lay low, use the downstairs laundry room and get the hell out of there.

Your 3 loads of laundry are not what is keeping the electric bill high.

Sleep in the nude is the answer.

Be helpful to the roommate. Take the roommate's most expensive cashmere and wool clothes and wash them in hot and drive them on high. So considerate of you!

You are hilarious. Calling strangers names makes you feel superior?

BTW, there is no need to wash underwear in hot water nowadays. But hey, you do you.
"...While hot water was once the best choice for washing clothes, over the last decade or so, companies like Proctor and Gamble have developed new detergent technology that can work as well in cold water as in warm water. ... Protein stains—like blood and sweat—will just set in further if you wash them in warm water...."

To save on weekly washing, be naked when home
