Low IQ as in intellectually disabled will present differently, depending on the extent of the disability, and everyone has a distinct personality.
If you mean lower than the DCUM average, you probably don't know who they are. Avg IQ is 100, and it takes about an IQ of a bit more than 100 to successfully graduate from college in most cases, so that's probably who your average DCUMer is, lives with, works with, and socializes with. But remember, most people in this country aren't college graduates, and you probably grew up with and regularly interact with people on the other side of 100 on the bell curve if you didn't grow up here or a place like here. A person with an IQ of 80-100 isn't stupid, won't present as stupid and in fact, might blow you away with whatever specialized skill they may have acquired. Everything is geared toward them--television shows, popular culture, magazines, etc. They are the common denominator. If your IQ is 120+ and you are paying attention, you could probably figure out the cognitive differences though, largely in abstract and critical thinking. A person with an IQ of 80 follows instructions at works and will need oversight and will make mistakes that need corrections. A person with the IQ of 100 can provide the oversight in accordance with an SOP. A person with the 120+ IQ is making decisions on exceptions to rules, that's one example. |
| I am a gen ed teacher and I was surprised how low some of my students' IQs were. I knew they weren't bright or even average but quite a few of them have been in the low 70s. It takes them a very long time to grasp anything new. They don't make connections so new learning takes forever. Sometimes it feels like the world is passing them by. A low IQ alone won't get them an IEP so it isn't easy to help them when you are the only one. I teach 1st grade and I worry about other kids teasing them as they get older. |
They voted for trump and think classy means ordering filet of sole medium rare |

They just process slower. It’s agonizing to someone who got it long ago. Even minutes listening to x explained yet again to the team for the lower IQ team member is extremely difficult.
While sometimes high IQ ppl miscommunicate, it’s rare. A world of unqualified pronouns is misery. High IQ ppl are typically impatient a-holes. |
Well, guess what? I have seen more hateful vitriol from conservatives, so there! So much for anecdotal evidence. I actually used to be in a relationship with a conservative but that was before Trump, I couldn't do it now. I couldn't and can't stand Clinton (either one) for personality, character, politics, you name it. What I'm talking about, however, is how gullible and stupid Trump supporting conservatives have revealed themselves to be on FB. It blows my mind. I used to respect some of them before I found out how their minds actually work. |
You can have a high IQ and be conservative. We call you unicorns

I knew a lovely gal from church who had a low IQ. She lived with her mom until her late 50s, when the mom died. She got an apartment and took the bus to church and all her other commitments (she volunteered at the library a few times per week). She died in 2017, and I went to her memorial service. The library supervisor said amazing things about her, as did her closest friend. She was a great person who helped a lot of people, and remembered them- she would follow up with library patrons as to what they thought of their last book, and what did they want this time around.
Low IQ doesn't mean one can't be loving, helpful, friendly, or compassionate. |
How did you know she was low iq? |
Women usually get it quicker than men when I explain something. Impatient aholes is almost everyone in the dc area lol. I figure though if I choose to wait in line then I chose to wait. I can't be impatient if I gotta wait. I was ordering popcorn at the movies and a lady behind me got right next to me and gave me an angry look and started to say her order to the clerk lol. |
Medical diagnoses, shared by her mom to church family. |
I'm PP. She also presented in person with some conversational quirks, let's say, and some fixations. |
Of course I do, and I assumed that the people on this board reading this had a high enough iq to understand that I wasn't referring to HS and college students working minimum wage jobs. |
This is a good example as to why it's very difficult to tell who truly has a low iq. Many people could have IQ's in the normal wage but with LD's that impact job or academic performance. In the past, these people would just have been labeled dumb. And on the job around co-workers who are not aware of their LD's they could very well be thought of as slow or not very bright. |

Everything else being equal it would make perfect sense for low iq people to be poor. Obviously we live in a society where everything else is NOT equal, so we can certainly assume that a decent number of poor people are poor due to unfortunate circumstances. But the thing that no one wants to admit, is that most likely a large portion of the poor simply aren't smart enough to not be poor. |
