Federal employee bonuses

Fed employees should receive NO bonus ever! Bonus for what? You perform nothing deserving of any bonus.

Trumpster alert. Do you believe everything your god tells you on fox news?
Do you even know how much you personally depend on government workers to be there?

My husband gets 24-40hrs of leave every year. He always chooses leave over money.

Oh, okay, those border patrol agents you love so much deserve no bonus?

Good thing they don't get bonuses then.

I work in IT for a financial firm and my base salary is equivalent to GS-15 step 10. I get a bonus of about 50k per year for the past 8 years. Great health benefits with 401k and a pension.

I got an award of 3.5% of salary (GS15-6) based on my performance review.

Postal person, so no bonus. But I did get a container of tasty white chocolate Chex mix today! Seriously, it's homemade and good -I'm eating it now.

Have you considered selling your clairvoyance services? There are hundreds of thousands of federal employees across the entire country (and world, really), including military personnel. You are able to see/sense that not a single one of them has performed work that would merit a bonus? Truly an amazing talent! Hell, HR departments would probably love you - you could come to the Christmas party with your crystal ball and read people's bonusworthiness for them!

Spouse is a fed and got a $1500 bonus this year, which has never happened in the decade they're worked there. I think they got $350 once and $500 another time, so we were pretty shocked when this one came through.

And the benefits are good - a bazillion health plans to choose from and much less expensive (for comparable coverage) than my BigLaw options. Plus, Spouse will get a pension and gets to telework most of the week and has better schedule flexibility.

I realize the trade offs I have made and most days am fine with them (for example, I am not worried about being fired because I failed to meet my billable hours). But for those who grouse about lazy, useless federal employees, don’t bonuses seem like a reasonable way to compensate high performers?

So, you want the luxury of not billing 2000 hours a year, having a better quality of life and government benefits, and feeling morally superior but you're grousing about a $350 bonus? If you're that offended, donate it to charity. I don't think many people are going to pull out a violin for a fed that has to be making six figures.

I know many attorneys who have fled BigLaw for government positions, but few have mentioned soul selling, and more have left for better quality of life (particularly after they have kids) and the opportunity to do more substantive quality work - they do BigLaw long enough to pay off loans ans maybe buy a house but quickly realize they don't want to be a partner and leave after year 5 or 6, at the latest. But they know they're giving up the five-figure bonuses along with 11:30 p.m. attempts to pry the filing out of the signing partner's hands in order to hit the midnight deadline or being sent halfway across the country on a moment's notice because the FBI just raided client headquarters.
