How much do you spend on clothes every year?

OP here, I thought about that, but I want to see how money savvy people are doing in their wardrobe department. I am a bit surprised to learn that so many people here are spending very little on clothes. I mean if your HHI is 200k plus, I think you can afford to buy nicer things and own nicer clothes.

I'm the person to whom you are responding and had recently wanted to ask a related question here about the amount spent on beauty-related stuff (e.g., haircuts, makeup, facials) but decided not to given the usual responses in money v. the fashion thread.

HHI?

HHI is $500. Our NW is substantially more. Upwards of $10M.

I used to spend thousands per year but noticed I was buying clothes and shoes that were going unworn so I cut back a lot and now I'm sure I spend less than 1k a year. I mostly work from home plus I have two kids so I don't really have as great a need anymore for work clothes or going out clothing.

To all those people who spend so little each year on clothes, do you feel like your existing clothes are pretty decent and you still look good?

Seems like a lot of people spend very little on clothes on this thread, which explains why people in this area look so frumpy compared to New Yorkers.

I don't know about new yorkers, but I agree that many people I see around here are not dressed nicely, cheap clothes shows. Also no one dress up for special occasions anymore it seems, I've seen jeans and shorts at Kennedy center, nice restaurants, etc.

I've also read online that cheap clothing stores and high end ones are doing great, while all the mid-range (jcrew, banana, etc) are all suffering.

So, a pair of sneakers, a couple bras and some underwear. Other than that almost nothing.

I am similar -- early 40's, HHI $300K, hate shopping and trying on clothes....

But I kept track one year and it was WAY more than I thought. If I buy a new pair of jeans or cords and a new pair of chinos or linen pants, even on sale or end-of-season, that's $40-50 a pair. The cheapest work pants ever get at the Talbot's outlet is $20. So I probably spend at least $100-150 a year replacing/updating pants, because things eventually get worn out or too dated.

Same thing with twinsets, sweaters, jackets, and blouses -- even if I only get 2 new things in the spring/summer and 2 new things in the fall, so I'm replacing/updating only part of my work clothes any given year, it's going to be at least $100-150 a season.

Figure over the course of the year I will get some new T-shirts, bras, underwear, yoga pants, socks, etc. -- that adds up to at least another $150. So we're up to at least $500-600 a year already, and I haven't included anything like a new dress, a new coat or shoes, anything to wear on vacation, etc. So it's probably more like $800 a year. And I consider myself someone who "doesn't spend a lot on clothes" and I never set foot in a mall.

I’m the PP. I really don’t even buy any of this. I’m currently wearing a pair of jeans I bought in 2004 and a shirt that is at least 8 years old.

I just pulled up my credit card tracking for the year. I bought one pair of sneakers, one dress, and 3 bras this year. Grand total: $259.90.

Most years I tell myself I’m going to go buy new things, but I’ll get to the store, pick out 8 pairs of pants to try on, and maybe one fits ok, the rest are flat out rejects, and I end up not buying anything.

I just added up my clothing expenses on Mint for the year and I'm at about $2k, DH is at $400. Probably done for the year. Sounds like a lot when I type it out but before we got a dog we spent all the money we're now spending on the dog on clothes, so closer to $7k.
