“Huge” alum networks are worthless. You want an alum network where alums are in high places and “go to bat” for fellow alums. I went to a big10 school and my sister went to Williams. Williams alums are a lot more helpful. Hell, I use her network than I do mine. |
Not really. |
Yes really. |
I know plenty of folks who have had OSU alumni "go to bat" for fellow alums. OSU alums are fiercely proud of their alma mater, for the most party. I don't think you know much about OSU given your comments. |
For the most party. Says it all! |
NP. I am from Ohio. Kenyon, Denison, and Oberlin really are not popular among Ohioans. |
One of the top 25 from my graduating class went to Kenyon, Denison or Oberlin. They either went OOS to better publics (Michigan, UVA), Ivy or Ohio State honors program/Miami. A few of the richer kids who weren’t great students went to Denison. Kenyon and Oberlin had zero from my class. Until I started reading here, I never knew these were schools people actually targeted. |
This should say *None* not “One” |
Cool story. Also doesn’t make sense. |
| When I lived in Columbus as a young professional, I found OSU to be the most disappointing part of a mediocre city--it's an insular, meathead school. I'm sure you can get a solid education there, but if you're not obsessed with OSU football its charms will fade rapidly. |

If she stays within the university confines and the places near it, she's fine. Venturing out into Columbus is not advised, especially for someone not from the area.
The crime rate in Columbus is much higher than the national average and higher than other places within Ohio. I have relatives who live there and out of the 8 of them, all of them have been the victim of some type of crime (mugging, in a store being robbed, carjacked) and two have been seriously wounded (stabbed, shot). The overall crime rate is 60% higher than the average of crimes committed in Ohio. It is also 62% higher than the national average. When it comes to violent crimes, Columbus, OH shows a crime rate that is 74% higher than the Ohio average. https://www.areavibes.com/columbus-oh/crime/ |
The Ohio State alumni networks in politics is insane. I went to an Ivy and my husband went to Ohio State. He is in a classic DC field and the length to which Ohio State alums go to bat for each other is crazy to me. In part I think this is because tons of people from Ivies are successful, so no one really cares that much about you, but there's a camaraderie amongst the successful Ohio State who have made it. |
This may have been true in the 1990's but in the mid 2000's to present has become a very competitive school. Admissions are equivalent to UMD; most smart in state students have a hard time being admitted. |

...yeah, probably best if you never leave McLean. |
