What do you call these cakes and where are you from?

Like the person from the UK, these are all cakes to me, apart from the last one, which is chocolate cake. I’m French. We have a LOT more variety of cakes, and they don’t look all the same.

Would never call yellow cake a vanilla cake.

And, yes, when I was a child, a yellow cake with chocolate icing was a chocolate cake. Chocolate with chocolate was Devil's Food. Don't know if it was regional or family.

Yellow with chocolate is still my favorite most of the time.

Why are 1 and 2 just "cake." That seems to be asking for confusion.

No, thats called carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

No one with real taste would call the abomination that is carrot cake the best. Cream cheese frosting should be outlawed.

3. A chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

I’m from Baltimore.
1. Vanilla cake
2. Chocolate cake
3. Devil’s food

2 is my favorite of the three, but people here don’t seem to have a specific name for it and they call 3 chocolate cake.

By chance is your family from West Virginia? The only people I’ve heard refer to cake that way are from WV, and Baltimore has a lot of WV transplants from a generation or 2 ago at least.

I’m with you if the frosting is 7 minute icing.
