Yes. Go into a townhouse neighborhood and 80% of the cars will be BMW/Audi/Benz. I live in a gated community where homes start at 1.5 and the only people here with luxury cars are the athletes and then we are talking true luxury cars that are 100k+. |
| You guys are drinking the Millionaire Next Door Kool-Aid. BTW the author of the book (himself a multi-millionaire) died in a car crash a few years ago, and guess what - he was driving a luxury vehicle, not a 10 year old Honda Civic. |
| Is an 80 year old widow of a CEO that drives a Mercedes "flaunting it"? |

I think it just says that people have the money to buy what they like. Not everyone likes BMWs or Audi, etc. DH is in construction and didn't start make "real" money until our 40s. I could have whatever car (that's family practical) that I want. I test drove the Cayenne, the Mercedes SUV, and the Q7.
Those cars just didn't make me feel comfortable. I've been driving a Ford for a long time and I like it. I know where the buttons are. I know how it drives. I know how much space it takes to park. It's just comfortable and normal to me. My fully loaded Expedition was expensive. When we bought the last one 2 weeks ago, we just kept saying "but its a FORD". |
So Trump isn't "truly rich"? I doubt you could afford to fuel his private jet. |
EXACTLY. Seriously rich people have different interests and priorities in life. The point is they get to choose what they spend their money on. |
| I live in the highest net worth zip code in the DC area and see luxury vehicles all the time. Yes there are some Hondas and Toyotas but mostly of the new model Highlander/Pilot/Sienna/Odyssey variety, not so much 10 year old Civics. I don't think the beat up car thing is as true as some people would like to think it is. |
It’s not. Drive around Greenwich, CT if you think it is and you’ll change your mind. |
This. Expensive homes, cars and vacations. |
| People seem to only think that "flashy" things are expensive. There are lots of more subtle things rich people spend their money on as well. |
| A more interesting question is how these "hipsters" who are a bit "artsy" afford $1 million homes in the first place? |
The bank of mom and dad. |
