Put me down for one who thinks that some of these cat rescue groups, while well-intentioned, go overboard and ultimately deprive cats of loving homes.
I am a cat-lover, having them since age 2. As an adult, I wanted to adopt a cat, having lost my previous one to kidney disease. I filled out an application, but when they saw I has a job, they said NO. They said they only adopted cats out to married couple with one at-home spouse, or to single people who work from home. I then said I'd be happy to take two cats - figuring they could keep each other company - and again they said no because I didn't have "experience" owning two cats at the same time. (Never mind that I was able to raise a daughter on my own.....apparently I wasn't capable of caring for two adult cats.) So I adopted two adult cats from another group. One lived 11 years, and the other is still with me - 14 years later. |
I actually fostered for a group and the main people would decide who " deserved" the cat. Who had a nicer house, who didn't have kids, etc. |
| We have a 3 year old cat that we adopted from a Pet Smart when she was 10 weeks old. We filled out an application, provided them with $150 cash, bought some cat toys and food, and brought her home. We were dog people (and had a 4 year old dog already) with 10 and 15 year old daughters (now 13 and 18) who had never had a cat. Three years later that cat is spoiled and loved by the entire family, including the dog. A couple of weeks ago we decided to add to our family yet again, and we went to the County Shelter (they were advertising that they were very full). We filled out the application and paid $45 cash, and got to pick up our kitten (the only male in our house other than me) the next day after he was snipped. For the last 2 weeks we have gotten to watch this now 11 week old kitten forge a relationship with our 80 pound foxhound and start building a relationship with our other cat. They still aren't "best friends", but the kitten is clearly growing on the cat. They spent hours yesterday watching each other and/or following each other around. Anyways, the point here is that we have used PetSmart and the local County Shelter, and in both cases we have had our new family member within a day. |

How would you answer this question:
"What provision will you make for the cat should you become unable to care for him/her?" I guess I would try to get friends to adopt them, but some of them are allergic to cats. |
