We have a 3 year old cat that we adopted from a Pet Smart when she was 10 weeks old. We filled out an application, provided them with $150 cash, bought some cat toys and food, and brought her home. We were dog people (and had a 4 year old dog already) with 10 and 15 year old daughters (now 13 and 18) who had never had a cat. Three years later that cat is spoiled and loved by the entire family, including the dog. A couple of weeks ago we decided to add to our family yet again, and we went to the County Shelter (they were advertising that they were very full). We filled out the application and paid $45 cash, and got to pick up our kitten (the only male in our house other than me) the next day after he was snipped. For the last 2 weeks we have gotten to watch this now 11 week old kitten forge a relationship with our 80 pound foxhound and start building a relationship with our other cat. They still aren't "best friends", but the kitten is clearly growing on the cat. They spent hours yesterday watching each other and/or following each other around. Anyways, the point here is that we have used PetSmart and the local County Shelter, and in both cases we have had our new family member within a day.
