Liability. That would never happen today.

We used to do this at our MCPS school, but not in the past couple of years. It did keep costs down, parent drivers were required to sign a form that they had a certain amount of insurance on their car, and off we went. But even though it kept costs down and I do have a tight budget, it always felt a little weird to me to drive around with a stranger’s kid or three. I imagine some parents who couldn’t drive/ come on the trip might have felt quite uncomfortable having their kids ride around with strangers. I don’t think you would neeed to be a helicopter parent to be concerned. Busses, charter or school, are way better.

Most of the field trips at DD's school (Wayside) are pretty reasonable for our area - $89 for a trip to the zoo (we hired a special docent to explain animals to the kids), $129 for a trip to the National Gallery of Art (chartered bus, plus a commemorative activity book for each kid at the museum and a follow-up art lesson at school from the museum caretakers). Pretty cool!

That one is optional, though.

hmm. I did a 3 city trip to mexico in 7th grade with my Iowa public MS. it cost $800 plus pocket change. Great time, one whole week - Mex City, Oaxaca, Alcapulco.
Then the 8th grade WDC civics class trip, that was $600 plus pocket change, was 5 days. DC smithsonians, Naval Academy tour, Mount Vernon, etc.
Always 4 kids per hotel room.
Not sure what it is w inflation.I was HS 1997

Wow. I'm so glad my kids are not growing up spoiled by $89 zoo trips and $129 NGA trips.

In this area there are so many museums and historic place that it hurts my heart that 7th graders get sent to Medieval Times. How about just letting them watch a performance at Kennedy Center?

Buses are expensive and you’re also subsidizing kids and chaperones who can’t or don’t pay.

Probably a charter bus. Also to the PP, chaperones do have to pay at our school.

We are at a FOCUS school so they offer a fund for people who cannot afford to pay for field trips. They collect extra money to pay for kids who need financial assistance.

Again, especially when these same trips (zoo and NGA) have been literally free for my DCPS student. $130 for a free museum? $90 for a free zoo? I hope this is a troll.

They should stay home then.

Violating BOE policy by creating extra cash for the principal. Parents love to be ripped off.

Those Wayside trips sounds amazing. My DS went and picked up garbage in a park and then a park ranger talked about litter.

what about 6 years ago? But this was in another smaller district, but a wealthy one. I drove a couple of 1st graders to a trip that was about a 30min drive. The district didn't have any school buses.
