I'm the IB family moving our child to Hyde--thank you so much for the more up-to-date insights on Hardy and also how great the Hyde Grade 3-5 teachers are; my kid is moving an upper elementary grade so that makes us even more excited.
This has been a super helpful thread and so constructive compared to other DCUM ones I have followed. Thank you! |
+ 1 Sometimes DCUM is awesome! |
| Bowser pretty much destroyed Hyde by deciding to move it so far away from Georgetown. Could've moved Hyde to Ellington; could've moved it to Hardy but no. A number of the teachers have departed mid-year and they had to go far down the OOB list to fill the school. |

Nothing is destroyed at this school! We don’t need people like you who have such crappy attitudes anyway.
Also, ungrateful much? We are getting an amazing new school out of this. While the current space is outdated, it’s huge and everyone is making the best of it. It says more about you than the school that you seem to have such a bad take on it. |
At least four kids left the school since January. They used to get the bus with my DC. I rest my case. |
Another plus: class sizes in the upper grades are small - as few as 16 kids I |
| But, are class sizes small in the upper grades because everyone starts to leave after 2nd grade? If that is so, I do not see how Hyde is any different than any other DCPS. |
| It is because people left when the school moved to the temporary swing site. They decided not to replace all of the students who left. So there are small class sizes which is an advantage. |
| Not trying to be disagreeable, but small classes are not always an advantage. For some kids, a small class means there are not enough different types of children for them to find the group -or even individual -that they feel comfortable with. I speak from experience on how having even 5 more than the 16 you suggest has been a far better social experience for my child. And, I am curious about the fact that so many people left because of the swing space when so many DCUMers are completely judgmental about parents not being able to make a trip across town for the “best”school for their kid. Somehow, it does not bother anyone when Georgetown parents don’t want to come east for a supposedly great school for a couple of years -it is still supposedly so great. The hypocrisy is not lost on me. |
I guess the families deciding to leave didn't think Hyde was so great...I don't necessarily share that opinion, but there you go. |
It wasn't so great for my DC. There was too many disruptive behavior in their classrooms and the teachers were always overwhelmed. |
| I just assumed that most of the upper grades were small because Hardy is still not a popular school. Did the person imply it was all the grades that had small classes? There was a lot of turnover due to the swing space but the lower grades are full. |
Can you divulge the grade? |
| Only 3-5 is small classes due to the swing. Attrition due to middle school is less and less the case. Check out the following article on Hardy: http://www.burleith.org/whatsup/2018/2/5/charting-a-course-for-hardy-ms-with-principal-cooke |
Before or after the move to the swing space? |
