I think the PP is asking what Blair is like for kids coming from either Eastern or TPMS who do not end up in one of the application based program? What’s it like for kids coming from lots or rigor and then are not ones that get a spot in CAP or SMCS? |
How is it possible to have a 4.9 with required classes that aren't weighted? |
It's called exaggeration to try and prove her point.... Or maybe her daughter took Honors Yoga |
She is only a Sophomore though, right? |
PP here. No, it's not an exaggeration. She has a lot of weighted classes. Her arts elective is honors |
How do you get into an honors art elective as a sophomore? Did she waste her freshman elective with art too? |
Np here, but parent of 2 Blair alumni. Kids also went to TPMS - no prepping. I agree with PP that your equating honework time with giftedness is both harsh and inaccurate. I think there are 2 critical factors you're disregarding. The first is course choice. A student who takes Functions will have more homework. A student who chooses the accelerated computer science program may have more homework. A student who takes AP non-magnet classes will have more homework than someone who chooses Honors level who will have more homework than somebody in the unweighted class. With my 2 kids, because they were gifted, their natural inclination was to learn as much as they could and it was hard to talk them out of taking the fastest/hardest routes available. As a result, their homework time was increases. The second is personality. One of my children had poor time management and organization. They were also a perfectionist. The other one is a model of efficiency and while thorough, is not a perfectionist. I think it's evident that the first one spent significantly more time on homework than the second, which had nothing to do with their levels if giftedness. I absolutely believe PP's claims about child's GPA. My children took Algebra 1 H in 6th grade. While it was unweighted, every math class after that was weighted. They maxed out their FL courses, taking weighted levels. They took weighted non-magnet courses. About the only unweighted courses were arts, PE, and Health (and one of them took the weighted section of Health). Don't forget that they have an extra period each year to take a weighted class. As for taking a weighted arts elective, I suspect her child had previous experience and auditioned into an upper level class. A child playing in the state orchestra is not going to be in "Freshman orchestra". (A lot of these kids are amazingly accomplished - highly recommend you go to Magnet Arts Night). |
