I love Betty White, it sounds like your daughter is just like her character. Maybe st. Olaf's is the best choice. |
Original St Olaf poster, just clarifying that the people I met were sweet & smart. A lot of them studied abroad with me in Ireland, it seems like they must have a big program there. |

This is a fascinating thread. Please keep the suggestions coming. Also have a sweet kid who is also a very good student (science Magnet student). Looking at mostly SLACs in the Philadelphia and Boston area but concerned about the social atmosphere in these places.
Some of the all women’s colleges are intriguing Want to look at brynnmawr Wellesley andsmith |
Smith will have a large cohort of very in your face and aggressive "social justice warriors." Bryn Mawr is more laid back and relaxed and much quieter. Speaking of Pennsylvania, Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson could be great choices. |
| Grinnell! Visited in the fall with my senior and we both loved it! |

What do you mean by "sweet"? There are a lot of good peers you will find at any of these LACs. However, if you mean a school that doesn't emphasize looks, money, sports, alcohol, etc., I would second the PPs who said look for schools without a Greek system.
I think Quaker schools have deeply embedded values that people concerned with fairness and justice would affirm, but that doesn't mean that they are not competitive. At a school like Swarthmore, for example, the kids are academically tough and very rigorous (but not cut-throat). |
| I would think something really small in the south or midwest OP. What about St. Xavier in Cincinnati? or Loyola in Baltimore? |
Almost dead again. I would spend the money because you don't know if it will be around for the next five or ten years. |
Just to clarify, Betty White's character was talking about a town called St Olafs, which does not actually exist. She was not talking about the college, which is in Northfield MN and is not very similar to the mythical town of St Olafs. |
Any more suggestions for Massachusetts or Pennsylvania for a high achieving but sweet kid who would not thrive in a very competitive or highly charged atmosphere? |

Mount Holyoke
Social life at UMass if she’s willing to join clubs there. |
| My kid just got a letter from Williams that said they “receive thousands of applications from exceptional students, but they only accept the kindest “. As exciting as it was to see a letter from Williams, she is not that kid. She would fit in at Smith. (Laughing at PP post about Smith- so true and I wish she’d go) |
