Like Betty White!!! Dumb as shit, but sweet. And she put St.Olaf's on the map.

I love Betty White, it sounds like your daughter is just like her character. Maybe st. Olaf's is the best choice.

Original St Olaf poster, just clarifying that the people I met were sweet & smart. A lot of them studied abroad with me in Ireland, it seems like they must have a big program there.

Curious for the reasoning behind this suggestion. I’m from Wisconsin and this was generally seen as a place where wealthy/preppy kids from Catholic high schools went- but maybe it’s changed since I graduated from HS in 1990!!![/quote.

My sweet DD who is a very solid student academically is a student there and she loves it. We are from Chicago and she wanted a bit of distance from home. She has met a really strong group of friends and is very comfortable at St. Thomas. We happen to be Catholic but about half of her friends are not. When she first got up to the Twin Cities, she was floored by how much nicer people were than in Chicago. This is from a kid who never had trouble fitting in high school but genuinely noticed a significant difference. She claims the kids are more sincere, less sarcastic. There are many smaller schools in Minnesota- Macalester, Concordia, St. Kate’s, Gustavus, St. Olaf, St. Mary’s, St. Ben’s. FWIW- my DD graduated with honors from a large, top ranked high school and is finding the classes challenging plus she received a $28k in merit aid. Just my two cents.

This is a fascinating thread. Please keep the suggestions coming. Also have a sweet kid who is also a very good student (science Magnet student). Looking at mostly SLACs in the Philadelphia and Boston area but concerned about the social atmosphere in these places.
Some of the all women’s colleges are intriguing Want to look at brynnmawr Wellesley andsmith

Smith will have a large cohort of very in your face and aggressive "social justice warriors." Bryn Mawr is more laid back and relaxed and much quieter.

Speaking of Pennsylvania, Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson could be great choices.

What do you mean by "sweet"? There are a lot of good peers you will find at any of these LACs. However, if you mean a school that doesn't emphasize looks, money, sports, alcohol, etc., I would second the PPs who said look for schools without a Greek system.

I think Quaker schools have deeply embedded values that people concerned with fairness and justice would affirm, but that doesn't mean that they are not competitive. At a school like Swarthmore, for example, the kids are academically tough and very rigorous (but not cut-throat).

I would think something really small in the south or midwest OP. What about St. Xavier in Cincinnati? or Loyola in Baltimore?

Almost dead again. I would spend the money because you don't know if it will be around for the next five or ten years.

Just to clarify, Betty White's character was talking about a town called St Olafs, which does not actually exist. She was not talking about the college, which is in Northfield MN and is not very similar to the mythical town of St Olafs.

Any more suggestions for Massachusetts or Pennsylvania for a high achieving but sweet kid who would not thrive in a very competitive or highly charged atmosphere?

My kid just got a letter from Williams that said they “receive thousands of applications from exceptional students, but they only accept the kindest “. As exciting as it was to see a letter from Williams, she is not that kid. She would fit in at Smith. (Laughing at PP post about Smith- so true and I wish she’d go)
