Is getting only drip coffee at a coffee shop an income signal?

Drip coffee is old money.

I get drip every once in a while, but I always feel like a schmuck for ordering it. Drip coffee -- even made with quality beans -- costs all of 5 cents and requires zero barista talent or high-end machines.

I also feel like a schmuck ordering drip -- what I make at home with my drip is way better, and even the crap in the office is really not that much worse.

I do feel stupid paying $4 for a plain black coffee, so I usually don’t go to coffee shops. But if I’m meeting someone or need to stop on the road, I’m not going to use that as an excuse to essentially drink a dessert.

Do you go to decent coffee shops? How many calories do you think are in a cappuccino or a latte? How much sugar? My standard order is a macchiato. According to google, 15 calories, 0 grams of sugar, 0 grams of fat. If 15 calories is too much, you have problems

I don’t have any loyalty to a specific coffee shop since I go when I’m meeting someone or need to grab a coffee on the way to somewhere, etc., but I live in Manhattan and try to patronize smaller chains/independent places over Starbucks. It’s not that the 15 calories in your specific macchiato is a lot, but I’ve always drank black coffee, like it, and have never felt the need to switch to any other relatively low-calorie coffee drink. It takes longer and you have to wait for it, vs. they’ll just hand you the coffee. And I have no interest in the sweet stuff.

Once in a while I’ll have a latte, but that is essentially drinking a cup of milk diluted with espresso. Not something I want or need to do every day.

We are millionaires and see and meet plenty of other millionaires at coffee shops.

Perhaps we can cross reference it with the periodic new wealth/old wealth posts. Stingy old wealth types would definitely go for drip coffee (although maybe they would prefer to drink coffee at home, brewed in grandma’s percolator, stirred with a 5 generation old silver spoon. Careful don’t spill it on the priceless 19th century Persian carpets!)

Oops, sorry, that's me. Don't visit the sins of the fathers unto the children.

Me again. What I appreciate MOST is making my own mocaccino. I make it so much better than any coffee shop, with their disgusting choc flavor. Only the best dark chocolate at home!

Coffee shops are for socializing with friends, or getting caffeine when you're traveling. It doesn't actually matter what you buy there.

Pretty sure that was a joke.

My wealthy AF DH gets drip coffee only.

Drip coffee isn't even cheap anymore. $3 to 4 a coffee and half the time it's mediocre.

I drink flavored coffee. From pre-ground beans. Made in a french press at home.

I don't give a fat flying fsck about coffee as an "income signal", and think people who do are jerks.

Fight me.

That's an investment. It can be handed down through the generations. Along with the little man that fixes it periodically.

First of all the "drinks" are like $5-$8.

Why would you even ask this? Why would you think about this?
