Sorry, I have ancestors who fought on the wrong side of history and I don't believe they should be "honored." It is what it is -- I can't change my ancestry and the ancestors can't change their choices. I'm interested in the history, want to learn about them and their lives, but that doesn't mean I honor them for choosing to fight for a wrongful cause. We don't have to love and respect all our ancestors.

"May god have mercy on their souls" is about what I give them.

They have my sympathy, but why would I honor them? Do you honor the teenage Germans who were conscripted into the Wehrmacht in the waning days of the Nazi regime? I feel sorry for them, and don't judge them like I would a die hard Nazi, but I don't "honor" them as though they were heroes. (Similarly, do you give the same pass to children growing up on the mean streets of inner cities, who turn to crime when they feel they have no other choices - do you honor them when they make the wrong choice?)

There's a difference between trying to understand history and learn from it and holding up those who came before us as worthy of our honor and respect just because they came before us.

Google "sovereign citizen" and police and see what you get. Yes, extreme right wing Tea Partiers are attacking police officers. And google "Bikers for Trump" and "attack" and see what you get - yes, more Tea Partiers physically attacking people in the streets. Just a handful of things. Not to mention the hundreds of hate crime reports compiled from police reports and media over the last 9 months. Were some of them faked?
