Just because it isn't possible for you, doesn't mean that people don't do it. I know people who have houses on Kiawah who go almost every weekend. Their work allows them to be in control of their own schedule, so they can leave early and stay late, if they want to. These people don't have 9-5 jobs. |
The really wealthy people my age (40) don't own vacation homes unless it's a woman married to a much older man. In that case, I've seen a lot of Martha's Vineyard (but for months in the summer) one partner in my firm has a cabin in west va and another couple of them in rural Maine. But those people are all in their 50's. Super rich in their forties simply don't have time. |
Kiawah is ok. It's a nice play to visit, especially with children. Yes-I've stayed in the "nice part" in a nice home. It is pretty boring and bland, and certainly not up there with other places of higher caliber and culture. |
Delaware/ md beaches. Those with the most money don't rent their places and and have the most ideal locations (ie downtown rehoboth ocean block house or even beachfront).
Some might say countryside Virginia or West Virginia mountains, but judging by cost it is definitely the beaches that command the highest prices and are therefore by definition the most desireable. |
Eastern Shore. The ritzy towns are Oxford, Easton and St Michael's. All are roughly 100 miles from DC - easy for a weekend. Dick Cheney etc have places out here.
We are not that ritzy and bought a sagging old farmhouse 15 miles west of Cambridge. But we got a lot of land, right on a private and quiet cove, and love that we can go out any time we want, no planes and just 2 hours away. |
I have no comments on that house in particular, but PP is right about that area having lots of country homes for the wealthy. It's not far from Middleburg, there are lots of wineries, etc. I wouldn't have limited it to that county (Fauquier county is right next to it and is quite popular) but the whole area has lots of large estates, most of them custom built and not on redfin. It is definitely the place to have a country home in Virginia. |
Eastern Shore and Virginia horse country for weekend houses (i.e., drive there easily).
Definitely also some in Bethany and Rehoboth area; plenty too in Southern Maryland (there are some incredible (and sometimes historic) farms/estates along the Patuxent and Potomac |
The super rich have their own planes and go wherever they want on the weekends OP |
Inexpensive? Here are the listings for Easton area: https://www.redfin.com/city/6296/MD/Easton/filter/sort=hi-dollarsqft Top single family is $9.8 million. There are 60 listed for $1 million plus. And that's only current listings, so total stock of $1 million plus must be many hundreds. Granted, I'm sure there are less expensive ones. |
But it's nice by Charleston standards and living there (year round) isn't cheap. |
Kiawah is a mix, like many places. The interior has homes for as little as $1.5 million. Oceanfront homes, especially up near the Ocean Course can go for well over $10 million. Not gaudy either, generally.
Besides folks, the question was for weekend homes. I think that means within @3 hours driving. Driving a car. Kiawah is @9 hours driving. The Eastern Shore and the Virginia countryside have a lot. But, I guess many who live there consider their homes full-time homes, not merely weekend. |

Uh. That just means they're pricey. Some places in OCMD are pricey, but that doesn't make it universally desirable. |
Of course, but with children and connections to this area most that I know do have a local weekend home (as well as other homes). Lots of "farms" in Virginia or Eastern Shore etc. |
