Is there a "NOVA penalty" for UVA?

Isn't unfair to those who worked hard in HS that it's so much easier to come in from NVCC? And why should a super smart kid from SW VA get preference overs super smart kid fro NOVA who had much rigorous, demanding schools?

I wouldn't call going to NVCC for guaranteed transfer "easy". There is nothing fair about admissions. It's not a meritocracy, if it were, you would be even more pissed.

Pretty sure there is some pressure coming from Richmond because I've heard it at other schools as well.

I'll never understand parents who try to "game" the system by moving to a lower performing school. Will your kid stand out? Yes. But its short-sighted. Your kids college destination is the not the end game. If youre trying to raise motivated, life long learners, you don't purposely place them in a less challenging environment.

Clearly most DCUMers buy into this idea, but is there data--culled from schools within the same system--that backs it up? Is the same AP class really more challenging at Langley than at a school like Falls Church? Langley's AP kids may have higher test scores, but is that because their classes were more challenging or because they come from wealthier homes that can spend more on test prep? A lot of confounding variables in this equation...

I don't know what you mean but did you look at that "by municipality" map above? Fairfax has 677 students attending UVA. Bath and many of the other southwestern counties have one or zero. My DC's best friend is one of those - only kid in the entire county to get in.

There are lots of enrolled students from Hampton Roads, Williamsburg, Richmond, etc. It's not "a rural giveaway."

Pretty much any FCPS high school other than TJ, Langley, and McLean.
