New poster, but AOL chat rooms did exist 20 years ago. I was 16 and really into certain bands, and I "met" a lot of people with similar interests online (and bought bootleg tapes from them). I didn't online date at 16, of course, but I am sure that dating chat rooms must have existed as well. Also, my best "work friend" met her husband 10 years ago on CRAIGSLIST. |
Wrong. .com boom started '97-'98. AOL chatrooms existed since at least '94. IRC chat's and internet BBS's and Usenet go back to the early '80. And there were other options before that. I had my first "internet" date in 1987 from a Usenet discussion group. Turned out to be a Trans woman, with the male parts, which was not something I was interested in. I met my wife in 1996 on a Jewish Singles room in AOL. I also dated off of yenta.com (which merged with either jdate or match). Wife and I are married 18 years this month. |
