Walking dead - the beginning is nigh upon us.

I guess I'm surprised by all of the negative comments. It was violent (but I'm not sure it was any more violent than other episodes) and I think they might have pushed me over the edge if Carl lost his arm. That took me to a place I didn't want to imagine. But it made me think, I was thinking what would I do? Could I do it? Would I shut down? No one was thinking this?

Negan broke Rick. It was some of the best acting I've seen. It was intense.

I am sad that he is gone and will miss his character a lot, but when I thought he died I was much more upset and actually cried during that scene. This time around I was sad, but there were no tears. maybe I just expected it this time.

I'm more pissed at the way he died. I know the writers stayed someone true to the comics in Glenn's death, but it would have been nice if he went down in a blaze of glory. Not on his knees. He was too strong of a character to end up killed on his knees, with no fight.

Agreed. The ax scene was where I felt Rick really was broken. He had a clear shot at Negan with his back turned to take his ass out. Instead he handed it back to him. The scene w/ his son IMO was more for the group, then for Rick. He was already broken by then.

Am I the only one who thought Jeffrey Dean Morgan was chewing the scenery a bit?

Some of last season's episodes were already interrupting my sleep so I was considering quitting the show anyway. I might just let them stack up on my DVR for a while.

There's a website I like: http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/The_Walking_Dead_Wiki

They follow the plot and characters in detail for both the TV show and the comic book series. I might just read the episode synopsis on that website for a while so I can keep up and not have to watch the gruesome scenes.

You'd think this would be the last season anyway. Who can keep this up for more than 7 seasons?

+1 My husband and I watched last night's episode but I felt sick to my stomach watching the gory details. I've watched the show from the beginning and have always loved it, but this was just too much for me. The eye socket scene with Glenn threw me over the edge. And then Rick almost mutilating his son? No. I couldn't take it. And then to see the last sequence with Glenn and his son, who looked to be about the same age as my Asian/White mixed son... are you kidding me? Too freaking intense, all of it.

The zombies are scary and all but the evil characters like Negan keep me up at night. I get that that's the whole point of the apocalyptic world scenario, that the humans can be scarier than the zombies, but as my husband said, why the hell would we want to start our week off feeling depressed and horrible because of this show? I'll follow along via the internet this season but until this storyline breaks off into something new, I'm out.

Could not agree more, PP. I could have written your post (minus the kid who is half Asian, although my son is also around that age). The moment that nearly broke me was when I thought he was going to chop off Carl's arm. I was having heart palpitations and honestly had trouble falling asleep. I've always been invested - to a fault - in the shows that I get really into, so I kept saying to my wife "If they chop off Carl's arm, I can't continue watching this" and I think she thought I was being a little silly.

Me too!! DH and I were shocked and sickened by the complete horror of Glenn's murder. Then during the scene with Carl's arm DH grabbed my hand and we were basically both about to lose it. I started saying 'Negan's going to stop him at the last minute..this is just a test.." Thank goodness or else I would have been traumatized. DH was all 'I don't want to watch anymore! Let's turn it off!' We thought everyone's reactions to the murders were not believable - at least one of them would have thrown up, gotten hysterical, passed out or crapped their pants, right??? Mind-blowing episode, however hard to watch. I think they should have ended last season with this episode. I need more than a week to get over that!

I think one of the most fascinating things about the show is how it began with horror and fear of the walkers, while the human story was how characters react when all rules have been removed, they have lost everything, and they have little or no hope of living much longer. Our group has usually reacted by coming together by caring about one another, developing survival skills, and avoiding letting fear or lust or greed or grief take over. They encountered other groups who came together in different and twisted ways, and have had to defeat them (or in the case of Alexandria, assimilate them). It has mostly been a story of our group retaining their humanity, and humanity's better nature conquering its more base nature.

Now, the walkers are more of a deadly nuisance than something to be feared, except when their numbers are overwhelming. Rick went from defense to offense, against a larger and more powerful group. And he lost. This episode showed us that there is another aspect of humanity that is more to be feared even than hordes of walkers. Its emotional impact was brutal. How will our group fit itself into this new order? Rick started out as a soldier of sorts, a policeman. He became a leader but now will be asked to be a soldier again. A simple revolt doesn't seem possible. Setting aside that Neegin has Daryl, tThe season finale showed that Neegin has intelligence and capacity to organize that goes way beyond anything our group does. How big and how extended his network is remains to be seen.

I think the point is that Negan is dramatic.

I think Morgan is terrific.

I'm feeling this way, too. I was already losing interest, but I just don't need to start my week watching horrible people do terrible things to each other.

Think I'm done with the show after hearing some of this from DH (who also hasn't seen it yet). I don't mind human on zombie violence, but No desire to watch this.

Nope, he had gotten pretty boring in the last few seasons. I wouldn't have cared if Maggie had gone with him.

You have a black soul. He was a moral compass of the show and an original cast member. Crafty, smart, compassionate . . . he was one of the best people on the show.

As for his last words, to the PP above: "maggie . . I will find you." Heartbreaking. As was the flash to the Sunday dinner that will never happen, with his son on his lap and laughing with Abraham. So sad.

And how about that foreshadowing when he found the pics of the bashed in heads in the survivor compound a season or two ago . . . ugh!

One of the last scenes with Negan's group leaving one of them took a polaroid of Glenn's body.

OK, I am a fan and I liked the show on Sunday as it did take a big turn. I've never seen Rick so beaten Question regarding what is bolded . I don't recall the pictures you are referencing. Which survivor compound? I did notice the person taking the Polaroid of the dead bodies at the end I pointed that out to my husband

It also helps to know that Glenn dies in a similar fashion in the comic. Actually, its a bit more graphic in the comic, if you could believe it.

Hes alive but injured and recovering. They showed her for a split moment towards the end of the most recent episode.

I'm a ginger, so technically I don't have a soul, lol.

Agreed that as bad as the beating deaths were, the worst moment for me was the Carl arm scene.

When Rick and his group got into one of Negan's compounds and killed his men. Before Glenn killed his first human, a guy who was asleep, he saw Polaroids of the heads Negan bashed in hanging on the wall next to the guy.

While we all want to believe that Negan is terrible for what he did, you also have to remember that night when Rick and his group killed people they knew very little about. They are really no better.
