DCPS is going to do what they are going to do. Same as at Lafayette, Murch, Marie Reed and all the other schools going through renovations. They have actually gotten pretty good at the temporary space thing by this point in the school modernization program.
It will be inconvenient for 2 years. But Meyer is safe and in good shape. The kids will like riding the bus. There are adults on the bus with the little ones. It will be ok. |
I'm a Marie Reed parent. The busing hasn't been perfect, but we have worked out systems now. Our swing space is in Petworth, about 2.5 miles from our school. I have a k student, so he rides the bus, but the pre k kids are in vans. Stastistically, the bus is safer (67 times safer than a car on a per mile basis), so you might want to lobby to put the little ones on the bus. The big headache has been getting to Petworth from downtown workplaces for conferences and school events. For IB families, there has also been the shlep home after PTA meetings. Some of our families live closer to the swing space, so the latter hasn't been as much of a problem. Arguably, if you work downtown, it's easier to get to Meyer than Hyde, do that would actually be a plus. |
| That the Georgetown parents are acting like entitled, spoiled brats surprises who? |
|
Why is it that DCPS makes every school community going through a renovation go through this process? Why don't they designate an unused building as the permanent swing space (rather than leasing it to the Lab School), renovate it and use it as the swing space for every school undergoing renovation in succession? For example, over the last few years, the school communities of Janney, Hearst, Lafayette, Murch, H-A, etc. could have all used a designated swing space in Ward 3. Other unused buildings in other wards could be used as swing space in succession as schools in nearby neighborhoods are renovated. No need to build a trailer swing space every time. No debates about where the students would go because it would be established as an expectation.
OK, what is wrong with this idea? |
That is what Meyer is supposed to become. |
Meyer plus the building Marie Reed is swinging to now. |
| Pretty rich that some of you are telling Hyde parents to suck it up when Burleith fought to delay getting redistricted to Hyde until after the construction. Apparently what is good enough for Hyde kids wasn't good enough for theirs. And Murch got 8.9 million for their space up at UDC. Likewise Lafayette. Who exactly is entitled? As for Marie Reed, the route you get bused on doesn't take 40 minutes. That is how much time DCPS found the route from Hyde to Meyer could take. |
| The word "entitled" has been rendered meaningless by lazy DCUM posters. So long as Hyde keeps its grubby paws off of Hardy I don't care where or if they swing. Hardy feeders could have helped support Hyde's efforts if they had thought to ask. They didn't. |
| OK poster, ask who? And how exactly would Hardy feeders have supported Hyde's efforts? Keep your grubby paws off of what is "mine" is the order of the day it seems, at least for you. |
Um, so feeder school wants to decimate Hardy ruining the pathway for all of us ..... seriously. Esp the the feeder with 60% OOB? Still can't tell from this tread if this is still a proposal on the table or just still hashing the aftermath? If still on the table, the parents still trying to save Fillmore will be up doubly up at arms. |
| Actually Hyde going to Hardy doesn't necessarily affect whether Fillmore closes or not. They could put Fillmore at Ellington, or put more trailers for Hyde at Hardy. The real challenge for Fillmore is (and always has been) the fact the DCPS is determined to close the program. Their recent "bus contract" switch that effectively cut the program time doesn't bode well for any of us who love Fillmore. |
I there are so few kids who live in Burleith that this is a non issue really and the ones who are there would much rather go to stoddert where we can walk anyway! |
Hyde moving across town and no longer using Fillmore makes Fillmore a lot harder to justify, since it will serve significantly fewer students. That may be something for the pro-Fillmore gang to consider. |
Murch didn't get 8.9 for trailers at UDC. Murch had to use 8.9 of the renovation budget to get trailers at UDC. In addition Lafayette and Murch are very different from H-A in being that they are more than twice the size. Finding a swing space for around 700 kids is very different than finding space for just over 300. I am sure both Murch and Lafayetter would have cheaper swing spaces but for schools that size there are even fewer options. |
Sure, but DC has decided to redistrict Burleith to Hyde. Once that happens Stoddert is not an option for Burleith, unless you lottery in. |
