You are going to have to write off Hyde for the next 2 years. They chose Meyer Elementary in SHAW as our swing space and folks will be leaving in droves. You just can't bus 3-4 year olds across the city twice a day. The school community is up in arms, but unless Duke Ellington is delayed even more (they are currently occupying Meyer), it looks like DCPS has effectively destroyed an up and coming neighborhood elementary school community.
The Marie Reed students are being bussed daily without incident. Ask them how it's going before assuming it is going to 'destroy' anything.
I'm a Marie Reed parent. The busing hasn't been perfect, but we have worked out systems now. Our swing space is in Petworth, about 2.5 miles from our school. I have a k student, so he rides the bus, but the pre k kids are in vans. Stastistically, the bus is safer (67 times safer than a car on a per mile basis), so you might want to lobby to put the little ones on the bus. The big headache has been getting to Petworth from downtown workplaces for conferences and school events. For IB families, there has also been the shlep home after PTA meetings. Some of our families live closer to the swing space, so the latter hasn't been as much of a problem. Arguably, if you work downtown, it's easier to get to Meyer than Hyde, do that would actually be a plus.
