High school SAT scores in Northern Virginia (2016)

It sounds like there are people who moved into South Arlington betting that Wakefield would improve and it hasn't. Being next to last in the area must be painful.

It sounds like there are people who moved into Arlington betting that its strong Democratic support meant people were actually liberal. Being in one of the most segregated counties in the area and watching so-called liberals fighting to keep it that way IS painful.

Tier One: TJHSST 2198 (highly selective magnet)

Tier Two: H-B Woodlawn 1860; Langley 1851; McLean 1821; Madison 1789; George Mason 1760; Woodson 1755; Yorktown 1752; Oakton 1750 (best of the neighborhood schools)

Tier Three: Washington-Lee 1702; Marshall 1699; Chantilly 1685; Robinson 1685; Lake Braddock 1673; South Lakes 1671; West Springfield 1659; Centreville 1653 (above-average for NoVa)

Tier Four: Herndon 1621; Westfield 1609; Fairfax 1603; South County 1598; West Potomac 1571 (above-average for Virginia state/nation)

Tier Five: Hayfield 1530; Annandale 1520; Falls Church 1510; Edison 1498; Stuart 1489; Lee 1476; TC Williams 1458; Wakefield 1431; Mount Vernon 1387 (below average nationally)

Sounds right.

I thought Marshall is a lot better than say Centreville or South Lakes. South Lakes SAT score got improved quite a bit but at the same tier with Marshall?

The SAT scores at Marshall have gone down two years in a row and the 2016 scores are 41 points lower than in 2014. Meanwhile, the scores at South Lakes are 37 points higher than in 2014 and those at Centreville are 38 points higher. They seems fairly similar now.

You are way too invested in this, whoever you are. Sad really.

Kind of interesting that the average scores for white kids (last year's scores) at Herndon is only a little lower than Madison. And Madison's white kids are the same as South Lakes. Also interesting that the white kids' scores at Herndon are higher (by a little) than the white kids at Lake Braddock and essentially the same as white kids at West Springfield.

How often do we see threads saying "avoid Herndon" and "avoid South Lakes" --- but never see threads saying "avoid Madison" or "avoid Lake Braddock and West Sprngfld."

Did you know that the white kids at Stuart(!!) have a slightly higher average than those at Centreville and Fairfax.

Frankly, I think the listing showing the whole school's composite average are ridiculous. And when you start looking at the sub-groups, you really see the effect of HHI --even within subgroups.

Housing dictates school scores. If the price-point of the housing in a school zone doesn't change... the scores aren't likely to change. HHI influences the housing that one can afford, which influences the wealth and resources of the student body, which influences overall academic achievement ... which influences composite SAT scores for schools.

Yes, but overall scores allow the OP to be a gloating, smug a$$h@le. Nothing more fun than pointing out that poor brown kids are stupid, amirite?
Almost as good as lording it over other middle class families that made different (obviously inferior) housing choices.
I mean... you couldn't afford to buy in 22207? LOSER!!!! Hahahahahahahhaha!!!! It's not enough that I spent a fortune to live amongst exclusively wealthy ( mostly white) people. I have to actively try to make things bad for others. I think all poor kids should be shipped to Wakefield. F@€# those poors! It's not enough that I succeed, I want everyone else to fail.

Yes. That's been the case for years.

It also has about 1/6 of the number of students as Langley or McLean.

I thought they are traditionally in the 4th-6th spot range and the only Arlington school in the top ten most years.

No, H-B usually is behind TJ in NoVa, and Yorktown is also always in the top 10 for NoVa. Yorktown would drop out of the top 10 regionally if you added the top schools from suburban Maryland into the mix.

Or had the diversity of some of the other schools...

#scores don't matter for the individual
#kids worse off applying to VA state universities with a homogenous population and quotas

What "quotas"? Are you saying the same number of kids get into U. Va. from Wakefield as from Yorktown? Prove it.

Anyone who has ever worked in college admissions knows this. I worked college admissions, but you can't prove it because it's a dirty secret no one will admit to. It just happens.

So you're basically making stuff up with nothing to back it up.

No I'm telling you how it worked in admissions but believe what you'd like. Hope it works out for you!

The last time Arlington Magazine had a story on college admissions, it showed the number getting into top schools from Wakefield was far below the numbers from Yorktown and W-L.

I know people who moved from NoVA to the middle of now-where VA to get into UVA and it worked. They could work from home anywhere and when his kids got to HS, he wanted them to be big fish in a small pond.

Anyone who's gone to college in VA knows this to be true. Huge numbers of kids get in from NOVA, and if you compared their stats to the kids from Stuarts Draught, this would all add up for you.

The OP is the one worthy of this eye roll emoji, but I am going to refrain from using one because I just feel bad for OP. It must be terrible to go through life being so insecure.
