Looking to move for a better public school

Stay put, apply for charters & mix of private school. Moving ain't the answer- trust me, we moved and I'm questioning whether that was the right thing to do. It sounds ideal hoped it would fix all issues - but can't say it was worth it. We have more space and a kid friendly neighborhood, yes but the MCPS school is okay, but didnt realize it would be so generic. Nothing special - ugh! Bottom line is each child is unique in terms of learning and ability to thrive in different school settings. Kids change, you can't guess in Elem school what they will be like in middle school, let alone in HS. if your neighborhood was bad, I'd say move. In your case, you may not like your new new neighborhood-it's so block by block - if at all possible stay and make it work.

My neighbor's nanny is Hispanic. Those are her words, not mine. Apparently her home school has demographics like the OP has described.

I think the op should move. Private school for three kids K-12 will cost a fortune. Sending your kids to a school with such high farms will be socially isolating. There are many drawbacks aside from the actual education...go read the countless threads on this subject.

You can not find a decent single family home for a family of 5 for less than $750, especially going to Wootton. Maybe Richard Montgomery but that high school is not that good. The IB is good but the rest is, um no.

Why is the non RBIM HS not good?

The same reasons OP is trying to find a better school.

OP's school is 75% Hispanic and large numbers on free and reduced lunch 85%.

RM is 35% hispanic and 35% FARMS

I think OP is looking for better performing schools regardless of % of hispanics and FARMS.

Why do you think RM is not performing? Do you have children there? I don't, but I understand it to be quite a good school.

Because if you take out magnet kids, RM doesn't perform well. Look at the avg SAT score w/o magnet kids for example and see how it compares with "low" performing MCPS schools.

Since approx. 25 magnet spots go to RM neighborhood kids for 9th grade and more neighborhood kids join the program in 11th grade, it is not appropriate evaluate RM with out any magnet kids. It would be like skimming the top 5-10% off of any school..

I can't find disaggregated SAT data. But SAT scores are not everything. I guess if they are to you (or you OP) - then you need one of the W schools.

NP - I think the best thing you can do - if you really want to find out magnet/non-magnet scores - is to estimate using available data points.

Since you know the average SAT scores for RM, average scores for RM/IB (from RM/IB profile), the number of RM/IB kids (100 or so), and the total number of students at RM... Then you can easily estimate (within +/- 10 to 20 points, I bet), the average score of non-magnet kids. Not exact science but should be close enough to give OP an idea whether she wants to consider RM or not. Good luck OP.

But you are ignoring the fact that a chunk of the magnet kids are RM neighborhood kids..they would be RM's high scorers. JW middle school is rated a 9!

That would not be as easy to calculate as you think. Only 75% of the students at RM actually took the SAT. Only median numbers are reported for SAT scores among magnets, whereas the aggregate school data is reported as "average"--I could not find out whether this is median or mean. Very little data is given about the standard deviation or the distribution. You can create whatever array of possible scenarios that would fit these data.
