What is your policy on soft drinks?

I was allowed to have to once per weekend as a kid. I developed a bad Diet Coke habit as an adult that lasted 20 years; finally kicked it 10 months ago. I think it was partially the forbidden fruit aspect of it.

My dad is 86 and drinks Coke all day long and is very healthy.

If you make it, it has a lot less sugar. If it is the kind with syrup, it isn't any better.

My kid hates carbonated drinks. So she gets juice or milk at restaurants.

one small glass of sprite in a restaurant. no refills, only once on a weekend, if at all, and I emphasize, SMALL as in kiddie sized. Never coke or fanta or anything with masses of caffeine and / or colorants.

Remember when people thought cigarettes and other tobacco products were no big deal?

And we drove around without seat belts or car seats for infants, toddlers and children?

Somedays my kids crave the sugar and others they don't want it. I let them decide and they're learning to listen to their bodies.

How old are your kids? My parents had a similar policy when we were teens and it was fine, but I can't imagine letting my 4 and 6 year old have free reign!

My kids are now 6 and 9 but our household has always been like this. This morning I had to go get milk so I picked up donuts. One ate half and the other wanted a hard boiled egg. They may come back for them later.

You've always let little kids have unlimited access to soda?

You should consider moving to America. We serve water over here as a substitute for carbonated beverages, in every restaurant.

Re:lemonade or tea being as bad as soda - from a calorie perspective, yes. It can be worse even. But that's not our concern. Our main concern is dental health and sugar is not good but sugar + carbonation is much worse.

We don't buy it to have in the house. If we go out to eat (maybe every other month or so) they can have soda. I'm ok with them having refills too.

In the colonial days the children drank beer. So I serve them beer.

Do they charge you for water or frown upon you, since they have to pay for the disposable cup they serve it in?
