Second cousin, actually.

Ha! In a Greek American family it is traditional to name the first son after the paternal grandfather, so there are a LOT of boy cousins wirh the same in our family. and the same last name too, of course. Everyone answers to Nick or Nicholas!

No. Seriously.

Definitely not a problem at all.

I wouldn't have cared and would actually be flattered, but it is not a custom in my culture to name a child the same name as a living relative so they made a slight change. What is the age difference between your kid and nephew's kid and how often will these kids be seeing each other?

NP here. I think what matters most is if you consider these people close to you (relative or longtime family friend = very close!), then they should be considerate enough not to "copy" the name. I know someone who had a family friend "copy" both the first and second name of the child, less than one year apart, and I thought - how tasteless. There are plenty of names to go around, OP. They can get their own name.

Your family is desperate for drama if that is the best you can do. Her you go-- you can borrow som of mine: my aunt just learned that her 17 year old son has been married to his 16 year old GF for serveral months (her parents signed the paperwork) because they started to get mail addressed to Larla HisLastName at their address. Turns out they really wanted to have sex, and had been been taught they were going to Hell if they did the deed before marriage. (This really happened. But it is a particularly redneck branch of the family).

See-- now isn't that much better family drama than I can't believe we have a Julie and a Julia?
