We had a discussion with my in-laws this weekend and clarified the importance, to us, of a first communion. They have agreed not to have her do communion when she visits (she spends one Sunday a month with them - we are not "dumping her for free child care" but encouraging a relationship with her grandparents).
I feel bad I was so annoyed with them, as they are just trying to do their best by her.
Great job OP. Those kinds of discussions can be hard, but it sounds like you are all vested in a healthy and happy family for your child and also respecting each other's religions. Pretty impressive all around.
