Jesus speaks to OP via her Catholic faith, which states that authentic communion is only available in the Catholic church to those in a state of grace.

OP here: thank you everyone for your comments.

We had a discussion with my in-laws this weekend and clarified the importance, to us, of a first communion. They have agreed not to have her do communion when she visits (she spends one Sunday a month with them - we are not "dumping her for free child care" but encouraging a relationship with her grandparents).

I feel bad I was so annoyed with them, as they are just trying to do their best by her.

That sounds like a great resolution. How wonderful for your DD to get to spend that quality time with her grandparents. I cherished all the time I could get with mine.

Great job OP. Those kinds of discussions can be hard, but it sounds like you are all vested in a healthy and happy family for your child and also respecting each other's religions. Pretty impressive all around.
