i'm a nurse and I LOVE IT |
i am thinking of getting a nursing degree. Always hear people saying it's a miserable job--too much work, not enough recognition, etc But you love it. Great! Where do you work? As in, what setting? And what are your hours? I am thinking of getting an accelerated degree thru Gtown |

What is this job? Exactly what do you do? Where do you get trained to do this? |
I'm a journalist and I love it. Always learning new things, talking to interesting people, sharing information with readers that I think is important for them to know. (My daughter also says that mommy helps people.)
What I *don't* love is the miserable state of the news business right now, but I am relentlessly optimistic that there will always be work for smart writers who are open to opportunity and refuse to sell themselves short. |
I'm a nanny and I love it-while everybody else is in their offices, I'm playing with "my" kids at the park, going to museums and music classes, having playdates with other nanny friends and their kids, meeting lots of nice people (parents, preschool teachers, class instructors, other nannies, other children). I laugh out loud at least 12 times everyday because of something my kids have said or done and count my previous employers and their children as some of my dearest friends. My sister has high powered corporate job in a field I know nothing about, but she calls me when she needs childcare advice and trusts my judgement. Like every job, there are things I don't like about being a nanny sometimes and it is very tiring but overall, I wake up in the morning excited to go to work, to see the children I care for and find out what the new day will bring. |
Can i hire you????? |
I am a lobbyist and this sounds like my job! I work for a trade association in the transportation industry. I'm a VP (head of the department) and work full time from home. I stack my meetings up so that two days a week I'm busy and out of the office and the rest of the day I am home, doing background briefing papers, talking points, writing regulatory comments, communicating by phone, etc. I do have an office outside the home, but I'm only there a few times a month, mainly for staff meetings and interaction as needed. I have a designated office in my home for this (my husband works from home too and it doesn't work for us both to be just floating around the house). On my less busy days, I'm free to take a leisurely, two-hour lunch if I want to (this just means maybe I will have to finish up in the late evening). At other times, my job can be demanding and rewarding: I testify before Congress, do TV news when a story breaks about my industry, etc. The trade off? I only make about 110K and I could more than double my salary by working for a bigger organization in the same industry. I wouldn't trade my autonomy or happy situation for any dollar amount, though. With a baby on the way, my flexible work schedule and presence at home (even though we'll still need some childcare help, it will be part time, and in-home, and I'll still get a ton of time with my children. It doesn't hurt, either, that my Board of Directors (bosses) are the nicest people in the world and everyone else in my tiny office are really dedicated to what we do and are all very happy, competent people. Yep, love my job! And I know I'm very lucky. |
I love my job and I am an engineer. I am very lucky that I had very supportive parents who encouraged me throughout school. I've known what I wanted to do since early high school. I've been unhappy at times in my career, but it had more to do with the office environment than the work itself. In those instances, I started looking around for a new job and have been lucky to find some wonderful people to work with. I did go into management for a bit, since the pay is better and it is easier to be promoted, but I really hated it so I moved back to the technical track. I'll never be a millionaire, but I love what I do.
The important thing is to find the things that you enjoy doing. You spend too much of your life working to do something that you do not enjoy. There were tons of kids in my engineering school that dropped out after the first year -- they had picked engineering since their dads were engineers and they figured they could make good money, but they did not enjoy it. Since having kids, I've switched to working part-time and am very happy with the work life balance. I'm on extend maternity leave now after having baby #3 and while I do enjoy being at home, I am looking forward to returning to work in a few months. |
Maybe, but not until September. The kids I take care of will begin attending school full time in September-I'm going to miss them like crazy-and their mom and dad too. But if my luck holds out as it has in the past, I'll find another wonderful family-I've been pretty lucky in terms of past employers. Knock on wood. |

Another super happy government attorney here -- I've got interesting and rewarding work, good colleagues, lots of flexibility, and very regular working hours (despite being a litigator). The money is not great, but it's certainly good enough, especially when you consider the layoffs and salary cuts going on at private firms right now. |
Big firm litigator; LOVE my job about 90% of the time, want to throw myself off a bridge the other 10%! |
Another govt attorney here and I love my job! Great hours (plus I am part time while my kids are young) still good money, lots of autonomy, lots of creative thinking, lots of good work and friendly colleagues. Great benefits, and I don't miss the firm life AT ALL. (I do have to be grumpy for about 30 minutes when they announce those big bonuses, but then I get over it when I leave my desk at 4 pm ![]() |
I'm an independent documentary filmmaker and I LOVE it! I'm poor as hell re salary and I struggle constantly with funding (my husband makes a decent living and supports us most of the time), but getting to meet and know people who want their stories told has been a humbling, enlightening, wonderful experience. I work from my kitchen when not on location so I have lots of flexibility with kids. I LOVE my job!!! |
