Am I having a midlife crisis? I'm seriously considering getting a nose ring

my mom has one and she doesn't look stupid with it. there are lots of moms that have them

Agree. The one thing that surprises me ( or not!) is how little global exposure people have. Nose studs have been part of Indian culture for hundreds of years. Ear lobes and the nose are prime acupressure points that cover a gamut of organs and it is healthy to keep those points stimulated. Small jewelry, studs do just that
In olden india, men had their ears pierced as well.

I agree with getting the nose ring if you want. I think they look nice. But I will point out that this may be changing (I am in my 30s), but at least when I was younger there was very much an "old-lady, provincial" association about which Indian girls were still getting nose rings in this day and age. I don't agree with that. But I was strongly discouraged from getting one for that reason.

depends on where yo work. No way you are Big Law with a nose ring.

Are you in big law? You may be surprised. I've been working at large law firms for over 20 years. Not in attorney capacity though - as secretary, admin, paralegal. During that time I've had a mohawk, lip and nose piercings, full sleeves (tattoos), etc. Many attorneys I've worked with have had sleeves, piercings, etc. The head of our litigation group has a nose ring and eyebrow piercing. One attorney in our Environmental group has stretched earlobes (not huge, like 0g or so), a nose ring, and dreads. We have many staff (HR, office services, marketing, etc. with tattoos and piercings). Also keep in mind that just because you are an attorney in a big law practice, it does not mean you go to court often. Most law work does not entail court appearances very often at all. You are mostly filing things online or hand delivering things, and on the rare occasions you need to make a court appearance, FCC/FTC meeting, etc. you just tone down your look.

In your entire post you mentioned only 1 actual attorney with stretched earlobes, a nose ring and dreads who is an Environmental Attorney. In 20 years.
So that is actually good information for someone who is not in what may be an earthy, crunchy type Environmental job as an attorney that in 20 years that person is the only one who was able to pull it off as an attorney.

As long as you have tenure it doesn't matter.

I'm sorry, but there is no way you are in a law firm with 4 women who all have nose and/or septum rings.

I know that's not exactly what you wrote, but this idea that attorneys at actual firms that regularly go to court and present in front of judges and have meetings with clients are rocking suits and nose rings is ridiculous.

And people ARE looking at your septum ring all the time asking themselves "what in the F?" all the time.

Wow. I can never get over the nerve of people telling others that their experience can't be true/real.

So then post the name of this "suits and septum" law firm. Must be a fascinating website with all of their pictures!

I'm not that pp. But, it's odd that you think that there is a one size fits all law firm.

Really who the hell cares? My cardiac surgeon has a belly button ring. I don't judge.

Yep, a belly button ring that is not displayed either in the OR or in court is definitely the same thing as a septum ring.

Not PP, but a septum ring can be hidden or taken out temporarily. So yes, in regards to visibility, they are the same thing. Both can be hidden.

My wife was 55 and considered a septum ring but had doubts beccause she thought she would be too old and i would mock her. I convinced and supported her to do it as it was something she considered when she was working but dared not. She eventually got it done and has since got a bigger solid gold one and i am very proud to accompany her sporting a very noticeable septum ring. It has made her more confident and i love the look. I am encouraging her to get more. She plans on an eyebrow soon and a diamond stud in each nostril. So much for not supporting her or felling embarrased

Nose rings are awesome.

Just make sure it is something that you really want long-term because once removed the scar it leaves on your nose does not ever 100% fully go away.

Better a piercing than a tattoo.

Personally, it's not for me. BUT if you like it, do it! And if I were to meet you for the first time, my assumption would be that you've had it for years - and honestly I wouldn't think anything of it.

Only thing I can warn you about is you may develop a keloid, and who wants that on their nose.

This thread is 4 years old.

OP if you’re still around- did you do it?

Not true unless you get pierced with a large gauge. I've had piercings in both sides of my nose and you would never know.

Lol, I'm previous poster and am still the admin for the PGL of our group at the same firm. I will not name the firm, but the office I work in is in DC, and we have many offices in different states as well as overseas. I posted in 2016 and never saw the thread again until now. I'm still here with my septum ring and other piercings and tattoos, which have never been an issue here nor at the previous forms I have worked for. I have been here for over 15 years. Best wishes for the new poster in this thread and his wife.

You’re old. It’s time to stop trying to be hip and trendy. Let it go.

Will it look fine on you? Sure
Should you do what you want? Of course
Will getting an academic getting a piercing at 40 scream “going through issues” to those around you? Yes.
