In fact, my child is still " on the close" and I have not had to pack a lunch or pay for a lunch in almost a decade !

That is HUGE if you are a working Mom.

Oh honey, that lunch is not free. The cost is wrapped up in your tuition.

just my personal impression is that the transfer process is difficult because every year 10-15 kids want to go to Sidwell, and since Sidwell cannot accept that many, the kids who do apply are often competing with close friends for a spot. a know a child several years ago whose three closest friends got into Sidwell and he didn't, which was hard socially for awhile. but eventually he did fine at STA
Parents need to learn to manage their kids expectations. One thing that has been an this underlying concern for me with IS is whether or not these kids are truly being taught how to handle disappointment. Take Sidwell out of the equation and look ahead towards college. If 20
Kids from one school all apply to the same college and all really want to go there is a a very good chance all will not be admitted. That's called LIFE! Is it disappointing? Yes! Does it suck? Yes! Does it hurt? Yes! Does it mean your life is over? Heck no! Most importantly, it won't be the last time you won't get something you really want either! Life is about growing pain and resilience! It's about accepting the path you chartered isn't going to be the exact one you talk...it never is.

Please somebody tell me IS DO teach these kids that?!!
And this would be a Negative Nancy *sigh*

This is not true about many applying to Sidwell. In fact, my child's year, only 3 applied and 2 got in. Most people coming from Beauvoir do not apply to Sidwell. STA is the top choice for most boys and for girls, if NCS is not their first choice, then it is most likely Holton or Maret. Most students get into their first choice school coming from Beauvoir.

This is actually not a factual statement. Less than five usually apply to Sidwell from Beauvoir, as Sidwell is not in the top five choices of Beauvoir children. It is a great school but Beauvoir kids mostly apply with their first choice to STA, then NCS, then I would say Maret, then Holton. Most families our years applying out did not even tour Sidwell or apply there and they did not even attend the coffees when Sidwell visited Beauvoir.

Both this year and last year more than 10 Beauvoir students applied to Sidwell. STA and NCS certainly are the destinations of most Beauvoir students, but I don't understand ranking them one after the other given that they are single sex, and I'm also not confident in your conclusions about where others are applying. They are all great schools, though, with lots of kids interested.

They may have applied but it was not all of their first choice is I think what the point was.

 It is amazing how after all the years of writing that tuition check, many parents still forget "nothing is free" at these schools! You are paying for it one way or another. The question is "how much"!

Free lunch. Still laughing. If that's the typical Beauvoir parent, count me out
Anonymous
Especially on point given that Beauvoir is 20% more expensive than comparable elementary type privates!

If you aren't a current or past Beauvoir parent why do you even care? The tuition is on par with its so called rivals and in my opinion you get a better bang for your buck with Beauvoir over some of the others. You don't have to agree, that's just my opinion and why we choose to send our DC there.

What do you mean by bang for your buck? What gives it value?

The "free" lunch, obviously.

So, which schools are 20% less but comparable? Sidwell is about the same, GDS slightly less, Maret less but not 20%.

I loved my dad's years at Beauvoir! Parents are wonderful, but we had a horrible teacher for K who has moved on, and dd didn't learn a great deal other than art and music.

So, did it work out to be about $1k for every song learned and $500 every piece of finger paint and ashtray?
