What grades are your dc in? |
|
Yeah, I might be. DC is not a town know for its understandin of potential... as all of your gray open kitchen plans and recessed lighting flips with fake pottery barn furniture prove time and time again.
I would seriously consider bidding on that house, but I am not that into shepherd elementary. |
There is a lot between gray open kitchen plans and
And do please share why you aren't a fan of Shepherd? What school do your kids attend? |
The house has bones (albeit a non existing yard which is a perk of that neighborhood). Problem is "bones" cost money. That's the point being made by PPs. |
|
Cosmetics are easy. You see a wreck, I see laying some tile, stripping existing wallpaper, maybe fixing the ceiling, finding a way to work the vintage cabinets. That's a lot more fun than your bland, beige and gray fake pottery barn attempts.
Shepherd is a great school... as long as your kids fit in. When they don't? It's lord of the flies. |
|
I also confess: I am not of the class who gives a shit if my kitchen looks like the tacky flipped kitchens. I've rejected houses cheaper than this for their bad kitchen renovations. At least with something vintage, you can impose your own taste without wasting a ton of material and crap.
That house would be fun. The flipped place on jonquil has had all the fun erased. |
You have experience with Shepherd? I'm really curious as we are considering it. |
I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. This is my child's second year at Shepherd and we have neither experienced directly nor heard about anything like what you're describing. |
I assume you can't read DCUM code yet. PP is simply saying they're, despite Shepherd being IB, having good scores, solid teachers, and a great community, Shepherd is still 80% black. Shepherd has scores in the middle 70s despite being 1/3 FARM. I have never once heard anyone describe Shepherd as Lord of The Flies. |
Well, that's a shame if that's the reason PP is disparaging the school. I know several non-AA families at Shepherd (white, Asian, Latino) who have described their kids (PK3 up through 5th grade) as happy and thriving. |
So have I. In fact, I can't really recall one negative comment about Shepherd. Only "negative" thing people may say is the location is out of way for most which is understandable. Shepherd is a gem of a school!! |
| The only big negative right now is the construction. It's a pain in a number of ways, and they're way behind the original schedule. Supposedly it'll all be finished next summer--fingers crossed. |
I wouldn't even call that a big negative. The kids aren't in trailers like at Lafayette. Shepherd is a great school. Funny that PP hasn't chimed in. |
Sorry. I have a life. No, the demographics were much like our old school in another city. And one reason we chose Shepherd. And the school that replaced it for us has even more black kids. If you must know. I'm sure however, thinking it's demographics, or we're racist is a convenient excuse. Academically, Shepherd's fantastic. I loved the teachers. I loved the programs. We had a lot of good moments there. Which is why the rest of it makes me bitter enough to talk about it on an anonymous board some months later. I did not like the children who made my child's life a living hell. It took me a while to realize that there was a real problem--and that it was an external one. Looking back, I spent too long blaming my child, when I should have been addressing the issue with the cohort. I heard --and still hear--similar reports from other parents still there. There are some kids who are not very nice. And no, they're not the "poor kids from the projects." The poor kids from the projects were all nice to us. Less so, some of the kids from the immediate area. Your experience may vary, and I hope it does. |
That sounds more like a personal experience than a reflection on an entire school. Especially if by your own admission you didn't raise issue with the school. I call bullshit. |
