Can your five year old swim?

- was there water present during the lessons?
- was the child anywhere near the water?
- was the instructor water-phobic?
- could the instructor swim?

Depending on the answers are yes then you have been ripped off my friend....

I teach kids to swim - just for my friends - and I have never spent a couple of days with a kids and not had them blowing bubbles (breath control), swimming (badly) across a pool, floating on their back and on the way to mastering dog-paddle. And having a fantastic time learning to love the water...

Refund time for you.

yes, my child has had dozens of private lessons with a variety of instructors. He is petrified of the water. Most lessons were spent on the side of the pool from ages 3 to 5.
It took 2 years of lessons to get him to put his head under water.
And he's an amazing athlete otherwise.

Wow, you have money to burn! I can hardly believe you. I would have used more authoritarian measures. Can't wait that long or spend that much money on something simple.

Like what? The child was not comfortable.

Yes, of course. We were living in Southern California when DD was a preschooler and it is basically life or death with everyone out there having a swimming pool. She could swim the length of a pool easily by five and swim underwater as well.

Seriously? I didn't notice the bragging, just answering your question and, yes, mine was swimming competently at 5. It's more the norm to be swimming than not, at least the kids I know.

We went to a 5 yr old birthday party at a kids swimming pool and there was one child who would not go deeper than their waist in fear of getting their head wet. I felt bad they couldn't play with the other kids due to the fact that their parent didn't enroll them in lessons to overcome their fear. Two years later and I'm pretty sure this family still has not addressed the issue. They did not have fun at the party at all. My child was swimming at 6 with lessons, but lessons didn't begin until kindergarten. Sure, there were tears and nervous moments, but so much fun in the end. Confidence after accomplishment is worth the hard work.

Like force the child under the water?
That would have worked really well.

Never knew of swim clubs til I moved to DC area. Asked friends back home, and they didn't know of any local clubs there. Just seems like yet another class / area distinction to have kids that spend all day at pool club.

I'm 30 and can't swim.....

Yes, but not any strokes. My husband was a lifeguard and swim instructor in high school/college and taught our son to swim when he was almost 3. We lived in an apartment complex with a pool, so we had easy access.

Validate fear and your kid will suck at a lot of things.

Sounds like a free-range mantra.

If he isn't swimming a full length yet, he wouldn't make the team anyway, right?

It depends where you live. If you're in NOVA where everyone belongs to a pool, a lot of 5 year olds are swimming. In NWDC, not so much. My DS learned to swim at 6, DD at 3. Both are now competitive swimmers, so it just depends on the kid as others have said.
