Holton Arms

My kid did well at Holton ... but she said it left a sort of lasting negative impression on her. She didn't feel like people could be herself.

pp again...I meant to say ... didn't feel like people could "be themselves".

Holton LS has a person who helps give the girls strategies to deal with age appropriate social problems. The girls are welcome to go visit the counselor when they need to talk about anything. My DD has done this and she has gained confidence knowing she has this option. Holton deals with all accusations of bullying head on when it is brought to the attention of the teachers. Holton impresses me each and every day. If your child is bored in math, tell the teacher your impression. I have asked for their recommendations in the past with wonderful results. Signed, HAS happy parent

My DS is in the LS and I completely agree with PP. My DD has had a couple of days when she wanted to go to the counselor and discuss something and has been so happy just having that at her school. As a parent I am really pleased with everything at Holton. I could not have asked for a better school for my DD. I would recommend this school to anyone who has a girl and looking for a wonderful school.

The counselor is beyond fantastic. As PP said, "age appropriate social problems." All children experience them at one point or another and I feel fortunate my daughter has access to such a talented professional. Even if a group of girls can't settle a problem themselves, they will take it to her for guidance.

That sounds really great!

We've found that the teachers and counselor are very, very responsive to any issues that are raised. We can't appreciate this enough. (Lower School Parent here.)

np here, and I'll join the chorus. very happy with the LS at Holton, both academically and socially. my dd is one of those kids who was solid but not a standout at her previous school, and now she's excelling and has gained tremendous confidence. things haven't been perfect socially, but as others have mentioned, the support available when there are issues (things like exclusion or unkind remarks...I'm not aware of anything approaching bullying) is wonderful.

Lower school parent here -- I would echo the comments of the last four/five posters. The experience has been wonderful for our DD and our family.

Do the lower school girls stay after school for activities homework club, other activities at school or organized outside of school. What is the typical WISC IV score?
Anonymous
No clue about the scores. On any given day, many lower school girls will stay for Homework Zone, activites through the Center for the Arts, or go to an organized activity such as soccer or dance that may take place off campus.

The school has a really difficult curriculum and drives the girls very hard. It's good for the girls who get into the Ivies (like mine). But, I'm not sure the hard work is worth it for those who end up at places like UMD...those girls could have gone public and had a lot more fun in their high school years.

Really? I don't think the value of education stops are where you get into college. This has nothing to do with Holton, but if you think a particular school is worth your money b/c it provides an ideal learning/growth environment for your child, those benefits should carry on well after college. Besides, the quality of work you do in college has a huge bearing on your grad school/employment prospects afterward.
Anonymous
I think that is a little naive pp -- the "name brand" of the college has a lot to do with employment prospects more so than your "quality of work" claim.

Not necessarily. I've worked at some pretty amazing places and just because someone came from HPY, it didn't make them any more qualified for the position based on their work history and activities. Sometimes "Harvard" was put in the maybe pile since the person's expectations didn't match the position.
