I love how people pretend that is a bad decision. For many it is a good decision.

Sure, but did you read OP's post? She wants to be in the city near her sister...

Exactly. Folks suggesting a move to VA or MD are imposing their own perferences on the poster. It would be like going to the MD forum and suggesting to folks asking for advice on school in MOCO that they move to DC.

Just like many assume living in DC is a bad decision. For many it is a good decision. Since this is DC thread, let's focus on DC.

NP. I second the recommendation of Shepherd Park by other PPs. Not much rental inventory but nice neighborhood, and Deal/Wilson feeder. A bit less expensive than other Deal/Wilson feeder neighborhoods. Your older kids could take the Deal bus on 16th, and your youngest would have a good shot of lotterying into Shepherd PK3 if you apply for 2016-2017 (fairly short waitlist of in-boundary families this year). Not sure how close you want to be to your sister, but I've recently had to drive several times to northern GT/Glover Park area for work, and it took 30-40 min during rush hour.

OP, what is your budget? That will help people provide better recommendations.

Shepherd Park is not close to anything but silver spring! How does this help OP?

Takoma (3 mins), Silver Spring (3 mins), Bethesda (10-12), Petworth (5-10), Columbia Heights (10-12) and on the red line. It's the same as saying GT is not near anything but Downtown and Glover Park. Maybe Arlington pending traffic.

Which red line station is near Shepherd Park elementary?

She wants to be near Georgetown. There isn't much closer to Georgetown than Rosslyn.

The Silver Spring station is 1 mile away. Northern parts of Shepherd Park are even closer. I know a couple folks who walk from their homes to Metro in 10-15 min.

So once you walk 15 minutes north into Maryland it is an an easy commute downtown? Not sure how you can try to attract people to the school based on metro accessibility.

Anonymous wrote:WOW. I would really thank everyone for their amazingly constructive feedback. The upshot seems to be to move into an area zoned for Deal/Wilson or Hardy/Wilson and I am good to go. So I'll look into those maps now. Also, everyone seems to agree about putting the kids on the waitlist for the charter schools Inspired Teaching and DC International. Do I have to chose one over the other? Would one probably suit the kids over another? And my two year old will be three in December. How does the lottery work for him? What do I have to do and what places would be near his older siblings/in the same system? Thank you again!

PK3 and 4 are by lottery. No PK3 in the Deal neighborhood public schools. Most people there use one of the many great private preschools in the neighborhood until PK4 or K (St. Columba's, St. Paul's, Franklin Montessori, Chevy Chase Baptist Church, etc.).

Not true. Bancroft and Shepherd have PK3. Please give accurate information to newbies.

I realize that, I was talking about the immediate neighborhood, since 1) she wants to be closer to Georgetown, and 2) since she said "near" older siblings, which is why I said "Deal neighborhood" and not Deal feeders. So thinking of commute, and having a neighbor with kids with the same age gap, I am assuming she is hoping to do what they do, which is to have the non-driving, babysitter age, older siblings pick up the younger child after school. In which case, the preschool ideally would be walking distance from the middle school and high school. This is entirely possible with the schools I mentioned if the kids are Deal/Wilson. But, yes, there are ES that feed to Deal that have PK3 EOTP (East of the Park) and the bus ride across the park to pick up younger sibling would work too.
