Just moved to DC post-divorce and COMPLETELY confused about public schools - Please Help!

There's been a huge amount of progress over the last several years, including an amazing musical, a new arts program, spectacular renovations, and a driven teaching staff. The PTA leadership is truly awe-inspiring at the school. The energy, and more importantly heart, that the PTA brings to their volunteer roles makes me proud to be a member of this close-knot community. The principal works with us to mold the values of the community like experimentation and reflection. There is a constant stream of new ideas being tested and evaluated, like the outdoor oriented science program. I don't think that any school in DC, MD, or VA serves children to the extent Janney does.

This post made me want to throw up a little in my mouth and I'm a Janney parent. Stop. Please just stop.

Hearst is excellent. Near metro and good for Deal. But the PPs point about college is important too.

DC also has program where every graduating student can receive $10,000 in college funding per year. It's designed to help DC students when they attend out of state with out of state tuition. It's called DC TAG if you want to look it up.

peanuts compared to out of state tuition. much better deal to be instate.

Eh, except if your kids don't want to go to an in-state school. I wouldn't make a decision about where I want to live based on this factor.

If you knew anything about Va higher education options and had recently divorced with two kids going to college within a few years, it just might matter to you.

OP here - just want to thank everyone - was able to find a great condo in McLean Gardens, and kids registered at Deal. None of this would have been possible without the guidance from all of you here, so I wanted to say that I really appreciate it, and I took everyone up on their advice, and it has worked out great thus far! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Anonymous wrote:Maybe capitol hill? Good elemntary schools but you may have to lottery for middle.

Why would you suggest that to someone with a 6th and 7th grader?

no way. Listen to first poster. If you can afford, move WoTP in bound for deal and Wilson. Be done. The truth is that you have little to know chance of getting into a top performing middle charter school. Cap Hill does not have good middle school options depsite what a handful of boosters tell you.

Congrats OP! I know you have a bit of time before your little one is ready for school but if you are in McLean Gardens, depending on which side/street you may be inboundary for Hearst. We've been at Hearst for 4 years now and really enjoy the small, welcoming & diverse community. When you are ready to start thinking about options for PK please be sure to come visit our beautiful new facilities during one of the open houses throughout the school year. also just for fun the Hearst neighborhood/community has an informal gathering every tuesday (thru october) at 6 pm on the playground for pizza - lots of kids your little ones' age. maybe we'll see you there!

For middle school, try Basis PCS, Hardy or Deal and you'll be fine. In wards 3 and 6 you have your choice of good elementary schools.
