No blacks are.

Absolutely incorrect. Women are.

You gotta be kidding me. Blacks are! I bet more than 90% of blacks in colleges are due to AAction.

So you are suggesting that black people can't get there on their own merit??? How the fuck do you know?

Yes, really. Why not? Harvard was founded in 1636.

HBCUs are a form of affirmative action?

No HBCUs are not a form of affirmative action. They were created when black people were PROHIBITED from attending majority schools! To this day, I could not have benefited from being a legacy at the University of MD b/c my dad could not have attended school there. They did not let black people in at that time.

In the days of automatic action for Anglo-Americans phenotype was a mask for incompetence (aka George Bush). There were many George Bushes in all the professions over the centuries!!! I bet over 90% of them were incompetent and not up to snuff academically!!!

Even Anglo-American women had to found their own institutions (the 7 sisters), like Blacks, since they were not accepted by dominant Anglo-American White males no matter their credentials. When do you think Blacks (or even Anglo-American women) got to vote without harassment in the US?

Wow! another American who doesn't even know their own history, culture, and literature. Blazon ignorance. The world laughs in amazement. LOL!

I was being sarcastic. HBCUs have educated well more than 10% of black college grads which refutes the notion that most of us (Blacks) attended college because of Affirmative Action.

^^Most HBCUs were founded by whites, endowed by whites and even managed by whites in the early years. If you look up the names of the founders you will find a long list of white philanthopists. They were a response to the exclusion of blacks from most other institutions of higher education.

These are legacy admissions. Legacy is a privilege that is openly granted at most elite institutions. Further, with the elimination of need blind admissions and the ability of very high net worth individuals to endow a chair or build a building, the admissions process strongly favors the children of alums and wealthy families that are able to give generously. Let's not kid ourselves, the US system of higher education is far from being a meritocracy.

College counselor at my kids' high school used to do a little line up. Grades, scores, etc. At the end, she had one that said, "if your name is Kennedy and you are related" go to the front of the line.

I thought it was Asians and white women.

+1 It is actually white WOMEN who have college cards stacked against them as there are significantly more of them applying these days.

more stacked against white men from rural areas.

Activities like ROTC, 4H, and future farmers of America actually decrease the chances of getting accepted into top tier colleges

Why should the individual Asian kid be punished because his ethnic group is successful?

Do you really want a doctor who was admitted to medical school by having the deck stacked in his favor? I don't. When I look at a diploma on the wall, I want to know it was earned and not gifted.

+100. I may be a progressive in most issues, but I've finally come to agree that "the best way to stop discrimination based on race is to stop discrimination based on race"

Alternatively, the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race, and to apply the Constitution with eyes open to the unfortunate effects of centuries of racial discrimination.

(I didn't write this; Sonia Sotomayor did.)

THIS!
